From your link:

According to police affidavits, Daniel and Savilla Stoltzfus "came to an agreement" to give Kaplan their daughter after Daniel Stoltzfus "researched the legality of it on the Internet," the affidavit says.

Did he google "Is statutory rape legal?"

Plus the other girls are the sisters of the original girl he was “gifted”. Also: the mother of all the girls was on scene when the police moved in suggesting that all the girls were there with the parents’ consent. If no one was abused then all he will be charged with is statutory rape seeing as how he fathered two children with the one he was “gifted” from when she was fourteen. But... I do not know what the age of consent law is for his state. Thus if it is as low as fourteen [ as it is in some places ] then he could very well walk - which could happen because the father of the girls checked online to see if it was legal for him to “gift” his oldest daughter. A strange occurrence but possibly not atypical for a “backwoods” community and possibly not even against the law.

<< who had helped her parents financially >>

By the looks of them, obviously by helping pay/forgive drug debts. Meth and/or heroin.

Perhaps but I do not want to jump to conclusions yet until more facts are known because it has already been reported that the oldest girl was “gifted” to the man as a result of him helping the parents out of financial ruin and that the other girls are all sisters of the original “gifted” girl. This case is certainly unorthodox by urbane standards [ hint - they are not part of an urbane community ] but if the girls are all indeed living there as a result of the consent of the parents of the girls then there might be very little that can be proven to have been against the law.

The 18 year old claims that two of the children are hers (with the old guy being the father). So I imagine DNA tests could show and prove that - and that he had at least “underage” sex with her.

That would be enough for me to string him up.

Former Amish according to the cnn article.

Scumbag is likely going to jail. For statutory rape in the case of the now 18 year old, assuming paternity can be proven.

This is a big (and real) story in Dutch country. (Local coverage here http://www.wgal.com)

As mentioned in another reply, the Amish (yes) parents “gave” the girl to the man in exchange for some money for their failed business. Two of the girls there now are in fact daughters of the man and that girl.

A few details from last night’s WGAL news you have not heard in national stories, and might not:

- The man who now has the 12 girls is Jewish, and was a customer. The couple say that their community shunned them and their business because of this, and that is why their business failed.

- There is now some suggestion that many or all of the other girls are also from the same couple, who at one point had 11 children of their own.

“He is listed as a person of Jewish faith that the family did business with and cited as a reason the Amish organizations were upset with the Stoltzfus family. The court document states the Stolzfus’ have 11 children. Investigators are trying to determine how many of the girls’ found in Kaplan’s home were from the Stolzfus family.”

He’s on the hook for statutory rape. In fact, that’s how the police got involved. Local news reports say a couple of people had suspicions over the past year or two — they never saw all the girls out playing, etc. — but that was not by itself suspicious enough to investigate nor evidence of a crime.

But at some point somebody made a suggestion, however they came up with it, that he had fathered a child with the girl at age 14, that made it worth investigating.

“they are not part of an urbane community”

Here’s an article that provides a picture of the house.

http://www.wgal.com/news/report-12-children-found-inside-bucks-county-home-lancaster-county-family-may-be-involved-police-say/40106298

This is not the wilderness. It’s a typical community in Bucks Cty. City water, telephone poles, electricity, probably a mall in walking distance.
