Virginia Raggi was elected Sunday as Rome’s first female mayor, exit polls showed, in an electoral triumph for the populist Five Star Movement that represents a major setback for Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. Exit polls gave Raggi around two thirds of the vote in a run-off contest with Roberto Giachetti of Renzi’s centre-left Democratic Party (PD).

The 37-year-old lawyer and local councillor, a complete unknown only a few months ago, had been widely expected to claim the keys to City Hall.

But the margin of her victory exceeded expectations with the exit polls pointing to her taking between 62 and 68 percent of the vote.

KEYWORDS:
The news is not so much that she's a woman, but that she comes from an anti-establishment party - Five Star Movement. She routed parties that have dominated Rome's politics forever. She's often referred as Italy's Donald Trump because she's not an ideologue, but someone who wants to fix problems in a pragmatic, common sense. With all the corruption in Rome she'll have her hands full. Should be interesting to see how she does.

The Five Star Movement in Italy is a repudiation of the Uniparty politics of that nation and the failed promises of parties of the “Right” and “Left” in Italy.

She’s anti-establishment but not an Italian Donald Trump.

She’s more like an Italian Bernie Sanders.

Her policies and proposed solutions are leftist.

Awkwardly written headline. Makes it sound like all the previous Virgin Raggis were men, and she is the first woman to have that name.

"Scams abounded for years, from stealing the funds allocated to transport ethnic Roma children to school to paving the city’s streets with wafer-thin surfaces, according to prosecutors."

OMG can she come to Michigan and run for Governor? Man that sounds like Detroit and Lansing in regards to our roads.
