Plenty of colleges offer remedial education, and given the wide variation of secondary education across the country it is both necessary and proper. These "student" athletes "pass" those classes even when they fail them.

Nobody is talking about "shutting sports down." Baseball doesn't need college farm clubs, and neither do football and basketball. If colleges want to sponsor teams they can do that without letting these barbarians behind their gates. They aren't students. Pretending they are is corrupt and immoral.
