The fast-food chain has plans to replace some workers with the touch-screen technology in an effort to save on labor costs.
By the end of the year, thousands of Wendys locations across the country will be offered the kiosks, while franchise-operated stores will have the option of whether to use the technology. ...
This year, minimum-wage rose to $10 an hour in California and will gradually rise to $15.
Wendys president and chief financial officer, told Investors Business Daily that labor costs have gone to five to six percent in the past year.

On social media, there were mixed opinions. Some said kiosks and mobile apps may help improve order accuracy since its do-it-yourself.
Meanwhile, the self-service kiosk trend is already being embraced by some McDonalds, Carls Jr., and Panera Bread locations

A kiosk would drive my wife nuts, as she always wants to modify the order. Extra onions, no lettuce, etc...
Of course, driving away customers like my wife might be seen as a benefit by fast food places, as special orders are a money loser for them. The make money by producing identical, assembly line products.
The dirtiest, most germ infested part of any restaurant is the MENU.
They are handled by everyone, they are rarely cleaned.
You should wash your hands AFTER ordering, to remove the menu germs. But, how would that work in a fast food restaurant?
Touch screens at the grocery checkout; the “pen” you electronically sign your name with on a credit card reader; germs are everywhere. But, what’s worst of all...the door handle as you exit a public restroom.
Every person who DIDN’T wash their hands has grabbed that handle and wiped fecal matter on it. And, when you grab it to open the door...

I use a paper towel. I don’t touch the door or the handle.
You’re right about the menu, but that’s not a problem at
fast food.
Most grocery stores now have the antiseptic wipes.
Did you know that a brass handle kills germs?
The kiosk would allow special orders.
There is no Chick-Fil-A near where I live but I have noticed on two occasions in recent weeks, at a pizza place and an independent grocery, the difference polite, articulate and genuinely friendly counter or check-out staff make. Amiable and conversational and great representatives of their establishments.
Those two instances caused me to rethink my heretofore unrealized bias against twenty-somethings. There may yet be hope.
I was surprised at a McDonalds last week. Got a pleasant, 20- something black guy that was helpful, fast, got the order right, and as I said was pleasant. That location is usually staffed only by Mexicans.
You haven’t heard my wife’s special orders.
I’ve given up using the drive-through, because they invariably become so confused they just say “please pull forward to the window.”
Then they’ll do the same thing with the kiosk. No different than automated call-in systems. It will transfer her to a live crew member or call center operator in India.
I love that episode!
IIRC, many of the ‘fast food’ protestors were ‘bussed in’ SEIU ‘volunteers’! Many of the union organizers were smart enough to KNOW that their ‘Living Wage’ target was a death-knell to these actual workers. Their real goal was to increase membership (dues) and pressure the already union-friendly city / county governments to increase the local minimum wages.
These 7+ years of Obama, his health-care and NEVER having a normal post-recession GDP growth rate shows its effect right here. LOTS of sub-28 hour part-time work and no upward mobility into recovering jobs. Gee, who’d a thunk it?!
I’ve tried the drive-thru at Wendy’s a few times recently and I can get the recap electronic display to show the correct order but, when I get up to drive-thru window, the order itself is still wrong.
Once my chicken sandwich became a burger and, another time, the (blank and blank) only order turned into (everything on it but blank and blank).
The drive-thru display is correct. The receipt is correct. The minimum wage dufuses filling the order are the problem.
The first floor bathroom at the 16 floor building where I work has a sort of "air lock" with 2 doors leading into it. The maintenance staff got so sick of picking up a pile of paper towels from that little area, that they put a garbage can in there, for people who DID wash their hands after using the restroom, the grabbed a paper towel to open the door!
