So,what rust bucket car should I buy?

It's gotta be cheap,it's gotta be running.

I need a truck, love El Caminos, then again I could buy a cheap truck that runs and get a 68 Camaro, then I watched the original "Gone In 60 Seconds" from 1974 and I like the fake Mach 1.

It has to be a manual not automatic.

Underrated ass-kickers.

* 1968 Plymouth Satellite with the 318 small-block. Hydraulic lifters gave it a kick that could eat Camero 350s of the same generation.

* 1969 Duster or Roadrunner — not quite sisters but close kin to the magnificent Charger.

Dodge made the BEST muscle cars ever!

Heck YEAH I said it, Ford and Chevy dudes and dudettes!

Saw a yellow 914 pulled over by the OHP...the other day.

Don't see many Porches in OK....let alone 914's...

John Deere, you gotta mow the lawn and then work your way up to something on 4 wheels with a longer and wider wheelbase.

You’re just looking for something now that you can wash and wax (the wife is still gonna make you coup de gras)

[truck... pre 1981/ anything w/out electronic ignition]

Search online in the non humid states. (I worked for GM, did rebuilds) Others will have advise. Good luck, have fun.

This one IS a manual, but not a rust bucket.

If I had the money I would buy something like this. An old classic, but with all of the mechanics improved so the ride, braking, handling, etc. is that of a modern car.

I recall when I bought our Honda Odyssey van 10 years ago I read a review where they compared it to a 1968 Porsche Turbo Carrera. The van did better in almost all of the trials (turns, snaking through the cones, braking, etc.) The Porsche did do better in the 0-60 straight-away time.

Here’s a fun site: http://bringatrailer.com . Has a wide range of cars and prices. Check a couple of times a day. Avoid rust.

I love the 67 myself.

My uncle had one back in the 80s that was in mint condition. He got tired of it and sold it. Says he still doesn’t miss it.

Cosworth Vega

My cousin had one, ran good. Or any Vega with a good body, beef up the suspension and brakes, drop a 350 4 bolt main crate motor backed up by a Turbo 350, conversion kits are available.

You’re not going to get a 68 Camaro or any Mach I “cheap”.

The AMX was a little known muscle car. Really tricked out at the factory with stuff Chevy would never put in a street car.

2 door 78 Malibu .
Yes, A-body GM's from the late 70's early 80's can still be found in good condition at reasonable prices. Check the floors and rear bumpers, they were very prone to rust. I had a 79 leMans, learned that the hard way.

You don’t want to have to contend with a literal rust bucket with perforated body panels or floorboards, so look for dry vehicles that have had no exposure to winter road salt, which generally means the southwest.

As far as type of vehicle, there are still a lot of earlier Mustangs around, which tends to depress the price, I favor the fastback model personally.

Another possibility would be performance models of midsize two door sedans, but even some of these have gotten pretty pricey.

The El Camino and Ranchero haven’t gone through the roof other than top of the line high performance models. The El Camino looked pretty good in its last iteration that was produced into the mid-late 80’s. You could probably pick up one of those for a reasonable price and de-smog it if you aren’t in CA.

“$3000.00”

Not much to work with. Running late 70s trucks are more than that now.

Don’t buy any they are not holding there value, watch Barrett Jackson auctions and you will see what I mean. Unless you have money to throw away....then it has to be rare like vin number of less than 50, a vet or a foreign car also low numbers....how much money you want to spend????
