5 Unintended Consequences of Windows 10 Upgradegate

One thing that really annoys us about Windows 10 is Microsoft’s aggressive upgrade strategy.

Steve Jobs famously said “people don’t know what they want until you show it to them.” Microsoft must think this is true for Windows 10. And so its developers keep finding new ways to trick Windows 7 and 8 users into upgrading because surely they will like Windows 10 once the see it. Or they’ll just surrender.

...

Microsoft acts as if its goal for 1 billion Windows 10 users supersedes the company’s responsibility for its existing Windows customers. This reckless battle has unintended consequences that not only hurts Microsft’s customers, but also its business.

three days ago i wsa on my laptop when suddenly a pop appeared saying that windows 10 was being installed and not to touch anything..two hours later i was able to use my laptop again...BUT my office 2016, which i bought from microsoft requires activation, which fails every time, and my itunes no longer works.

six hours of phone support failed to revolve the m=problem, and microsoft eventually refused to do any more because i no longer had the product key, and the email used during the office install was no longer valid.

not happy and will be happy to join any class action legal action against them.

I’ll comment later. Probably won’t ping the list (done a lot of that on this topic already) but it looks to be a good thread...

Same with my office 2013, home & school version. I can't find the disc sleeve with activation code which is supposed to be on it. IOW, they stole my office.

Besides applications to prevent Windows 10 upgrading, create a non-admin account with basic rights. Disable automatic downloads and login every once in a while login as admin to get the security patches. Just make sure the “patch” that upgrades it to 10 is NOT checked during downloads.

WinX obsoletes your legacy hardware.

It's not just "legacy hardware" that it causes problems with. Computer-controlled machinery, diagnostic and analytic proprietary software needed for various specialized functions, and even Point-of-Sale or basic spreadsheet utilities many people need to run their businesses are also affected.

My CAD/CAM software, Electronics Laboratory and Spice Simulations, and specialized Data Acquisition and A/D controlling software simply will not run on anything past XP. I NEED to run XP to continue working with these and other programs, and I know many, many other people have become dependent upon the software they have come to rely upon over the years and being forced to change to a newer OS that will not support the legacy applications they need on a continual basis is not a viable (or needed) option at all!

I think it depends upon the content. FR, for example, is largely text-based so it does not require much to log on and access the site. Audio posts and Flash inserts are really not required for that, but for sites such as Youtube and the like then I think it is a given that you need a relatively new machine and OS to view the latest content on them.

That said, I have one machine running on 128 Megs with Mepis 7 installed that is a bit sluggish but chugs through the needed netbrowsing demands with no problems. Emails, FR, filesharing, and even the occasional IRC (gaim) or skype/ekiga useages it handles well, as does its occasional discburning, ripping, or copying for critical data discs (as well as backups of course for the system) or DVD movies.

Older machine, older (over 5 years) OS, and I see absolutely no need to try to install some bloated, unstable, and dangerous system-choking Latest-and-greatest OS that adds absolutely nothing to the machine for what I need it to do.

Other older machines that I support have Damn Small Linux, Linux Lite, Anti-X, or other featherweight distros running on them and they work quite well indeed for what I require them to do. As the article points out, the path microsoft is tromping is not exactly the best choice for everyone on the planet, despite what they might wish it to be.

Try: Run Windows Update and click “View update history” to see all the updates you have installed. Look for, or search for, KB3035583, select it, and then click to uninstall or change it. Windows will ask “Are you sure?” Just click “Yes”. It won’t bother you again … unless you re-install KB3035583. http://www.windows10update.com/the-windows-10-free-upgrade-faq/

I personally was not quick to jump on the ‘doze bandwagon, since all the applications I was working with at the time were DOS-based and Windows 3.0 just ran far too slowly and I had no need for a GUI environment for the work I was tasked with. Over the years however more and more useful programs were released that not only worked well in the ‘doze environment but began to integrate well also. So, I began working more and more in Windows as things progressed.

Now I have some critical programs that need Windows to operate, although I have progressed to pretty much all-Linux for everything else. Actually, at first I was just a bit amused watching the “upgrade” consternations proceed because they reminded so much about the win2k-to-XP events that played out not that long ago.

The win10 problems however, are turning out to be much more worrisome this time around due to the machinations of the microsoft moguls and the fact that so many people simply do not need or even want to upgrade their perfectly good current setups simply for the opportunity to possess the newest Windows offering(s).

Microsoft is making no friends with their we-know-best attitude in pushing the win10 OS.

Some people do indeed like win10, and I am glad they like it.

Most don’t.

Some people liked win8 and 8.1, but many did not. Some people could not even run win7 on their machines and did not feel they should have to run out and purchase entirely new machines simply to run a newer OS.

Some people are content to continue on with their working-perfectly current computer set-ups and have absolutely no desire to “upgrade”. Being forced to do so at the rough equivalent of the dangerous end of a firearm is not going over well.

Get a Mac.

I have indeed recommended that specific option to people in the past, realizing that some people would simply be happier with a Macmachine than having to deal with the difficulties present in their 'doze machines.

Some people love operating 4x4 pickups, cruising the Autobahn (sp?), or running about in a Hummer. Others need to stick with their VW Bug. Really.

So yes, I have come to the realization over the years that for the purposes some people need their computers for, a Mac is a perfectly acceptable option, and if working with a 'doze machine is too much trouble for them then they will never be comfortable in a 'nix environment. If it works for them, then it just works -and happy that they are content we should all be.

Have you considered running a bootable disc with Kiosk Linux on it instead of allowing your windows machine on the internet? You can boot off of the disc when you wish to go online and browse and email to your heart’s content, and the disc will not allow anything to be written or saved to your machine.

Then, for any other purposes you can continue using your machine for any other tasks you need it for.

That will not only stop any and all virus and malware infections from afflicting your machine, it will also completely stop the nagware and “upgrade” attempts we are currently struggling with.

You might want to give it a try, and it’s completely free to download and burn.

Cheers. :)

Thank you so much. I am seemingly enjoying smooth sailing presently, but Windows updates are not loading apparently, since the icon is always on, and asking to update.

I will save your advice and deliberate on it. Thank you. Rita

I’m using the same iMac I bought in 2011.
Apple has updated the operating system twice and so far, there have been no bugs, no attacks, just smooth sailing.

There are no Apple stores hereabouts in the Ozarks. I bought the machine directly from Apple and had my son (in Seattle) walk me through via two or three phone calls. He spec’ed the machine and I’m grateful for that.

Good for you. As long as you are happy with your machine, and it does what you need it to do, don’t let anyone tell you that it (or you) needs to change.

If you feel an overpowering need to purchase a new machine and play with the latest OS, then of course feel free. But if it already just works, do as so many other do and don’t try to “fix” it. It’s not like it is broken, after all.

Cheers!
