Hispanics make up 39 percent of the new cadet class, in a department that is 27 percent Hispanic, while Asian and Pacific Islanders make up 21.9 percent of the new cadets, or triple the percentage of current officers of that ethnicity.
The percentage of black cadets is 16.4 percent, slightly above department demographics, despite efforts by Mayor Bill de Blasio to increase the force’s African-American makeup to 23 percent from the current level of 15 percent.
The percentage of whites is 19.8 percent, with the force at 50 percent.

Interesting that several years ago, believe Martin O’Malley was mayor, that an ALL WHITE class graduated from the Fire Academy in Baltimore MD.
The powers that be couldn’t figure it out but it was finally determined that it was one of those ‘make up’ classes and had started about 5 years earlier and kept getting put off.
Seems all the Minorities that had qualified for the initial class went on to bigger and better things, while the Whites had more of a ‘family type commitment’ - generations of FD types etc.
They broke speed records to get a ‘proper’ class started and in place...
‘They’ were interviewing citizens about being enraged over no Blacks or Hispanics etc in the Class and one Black woman - I will be generous and say she weighed ‘above 200 lbs’ (HA), they asked her about it and she said
“Honey, If I get trapped on the third floor I really don’t care who comes to rescue my ‘fat, Black Ass’ (close)”...

the same thing happened in the city I retired from. My son and many other generational family firefighters sons were jump over, they filed suit and more than 1/2 the class were sons/daughters of firefighters. I guess it’s that white privilege thingy or something but here’s the fact.
In normal families, which I wish they all were, most son’s wish to emulate there fathers. If your sons a firefighter, cop, roughneck, carpenter and you are raised with your mom and dad in a normal nuclear family and hear all the work stories at dinner. Guess what, as the son, you want to be one too.
Zero is the goal. By whatever means necessary.
