Muhammad Ali is in "grave condition" in a Phoenix-area hospital, a well-informed source tells NBC News, as the boxing legend continues to battle a respiratory condition.

The 74-year-old former heavyweight champion's family has gathered by his bedside just a day after he had been hospitalized in what spokesman Bob Gunnell said Thursday was to be a "brief" stay.

Joe Frazier was the classiest heavyweight of that era, and a highly honorable man. After he KO'd Clay, he demanded that Clay apologize for the racist demeaning things he said about him before the fight.

Ali, of course, never apologized

Cassius Clay, the coward who ran to Europe

Completely untrue. He stayed in the states and served 4 years in prison rather than fleeing to Canada. And those 4 years were in the prime of his life.

I was just reading about him He was sentenced to 5 years but never served a day.

He could be entertaining but was basically worthless. A Black Muslim for which the media thought was great. A braggart which the media thought was great.

Basically sorry as he could be but I would still pick him over Obama.

Ali spent the next three years free while his conviction was on appeal; he lectured at universities and Muslim gatherings around the United States and gained support as anti-war sentiment increased.

His appeal would reach the Supreme Court in 1971. In Clay v. United States, the Court ruled 8-0 that Ali met the three standards for conscientious objector status: that he opposed war in any form, that his beliefs were based on religious teaching and that his objection was sincere. His conviction was reversed.

He returned to boxing in 1970

Well, at least he did not run away to Canada, he went to jail for his beliefs.

Floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee. He was the greatest.

OK........... I will dawn my asbestos flak jacket:

The man gave up his crown, millions in lost income, because he was opposed to the war. Others will call him many things (they already have)but he was sincere in his beliefs and stuck by his principles. I forgave him many years ago.

He was also one hell of a fighter..........ask Sonny Liston.

***that he opposed war in any form, that his beliefs were based on religious teaching***

Passed himself of as a moslem imman against war. What a joke!
He may have pulled on over on the leftist SCOTUS but not on the American people whose sons were being drafted without an excuse.

IF he was really “sincere”, he could have worked in a hospital or been a medic.

Ali called him a "Gorilla". If a white guy called him that, he'd be skewered.
