I drove in the SF area for several years.
A cop told me that certain types of Chinamen have a superstition about looking in mirrors. They simply don’t do it. Side view, rear view, whatever: They do not want to look into them because of their primitive superstition.
Thus, when we’d see that little jade and red tassel good luck thing hanging from a car’s rear view mirror, we’d give them a wide berth, because they were most likely Chinamen.
And yes, they are horrible drivers. I call it immoral. They do not care who they kill. They care about getting caught.
Yep. I didn’t know they don’t believe in looking in mirrors, that explains a lot. BTW, I have one of those jade and red tassel safe travel things on my stick shift, although I’m not Asian I figure anything helps.
I think that for some Chinese seeing one’s reflection means maybe seeing the Grim Reaper looming behind, sorta like that Twilight Zone episode.
They say never give a Chinese a clock for a gift. It’s a reminder of approaching death.
Q: What do you get when you cross a Mexican and an Asian?
A: A car thief who can’t drive.
