I am a hummingbird FREAK. Fascinating little creatures. Tip for making Hummingbird food for feeders: A tad more than 1 part sugar to 4 parts water (heaping 1/2 cup sugar to 2 cups water (or a standard full water bottle is okay))

And use SPRING WATER or purified water NOT TAP WATER!!

I’ve got two hummer nests in my backyard right now. Two newly hatched chicks in one, the other is already done for this season.

rlmorel said that hummers are ‘friendly but territorial’. ‘Fearless and extremely territorial’ is more my experience. They have the personality of an angry chihuahua crossed with a pitbull if they are annoyed with your presence in their territory. Hummingbirds are the only bird that I know what can cuss, other than parrots.

Love to watch and hear them. They day birds don’t have memories.....funny when they show up here they always fly to the spot where the feeder hangs when I have it up.

There’s a mated pair of Roadrunners with a nest near me. Baby hummingbirds are like little snacks to them, as well as baby quail, baby doves, and every lizard they can get their greasy beaks on. They’re regular genocidal killing machines when it comes to feeding their young.

I read of a woman in Louisiana that goes through 5 lbs. of sugar a day when the hummers come over the Gulf.

My son and friend were watching the hummers from the window. Something spooked them and they all took off...... one straight into the window screen! Its beak went through the screen, the screen provided a sudden stop for its body and it spit all its juice all over the window. The boys cracked up, and went out to free him. Just as they got there, he backed up and took off, none the worse for wear.
