Next week my wife and I are going to Canada for a few days and I would like to buy some Canadian whisky. My price range would be in the area of Johnnie Walker Black Label and below. Any ideas?
Try the Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye
I used to keep my mouthpieces and necks and stuff in Crown Royal bags. After a gig, when everybody's gone and we're packing up, I could walk around the tables and collect 4 or 5 Crown Royal bags, and occasionally a bottle with some left in it.
not meaning disrespect BUT,
Canadian and Irish whiskeys have little rules how they can be made. At home in a bath tub? What are the ingredients?
While American Bourbon has set rules.
Just saying, though I doubt Crown Royal is made using cat hair.
Ever tried Very Old Barton? Exceptional bourbon for it's price.
It’s been 30 years now But I remember Yukon Jack. Was my Dad’s favorite too.
Crown Royal
The church elder put a bottle of Jim Beam on the lectern at the adult study session and the group gasped.
He poured a glass full, then pulled a night crawler worm out of a bait can and dropped it in the glass.
The worm writhed all the way to the bottom, then died.
“What lesson do we draw from this demonstration, brothers and sisters?” asked the elder.
An old man in the back finally said, “Drink whiskey and you won’t get worms?”
It's much more of an "artisan" distillery than the huge places such as Seagrams. Do some research on it - the company ages the component whiskies (rye, corn, etc.) separately, then blends them to reach target flavor profiles.
Of course, that product is readily available in the US. Are you looking for something that is unique to the Canadian home market?
I have assumed for years that most Canadian whiskies are blended. Blends to me don’t have much flavor.
Didn’t know it’s a matter of what’s exported and what is not.
Sticking to straight bourbon.
I was clued in to Wiser’s but still have never tried it. I can get Seagram’s VO at just about any 7-11 in the Metro Detroit area and it’s so much cheaper than shelling out for a few VOs and water at the bar, even during Happy Hour. I think it would cost even more if it was mixed with anything but water. At home, I mix with tap water, crushed ice, lemon slice and then shake the hell out of it in a tall slender 10 oz. jar with a lid on it...unscrew the lid and presto, I’m good to go!
Just pick up a half rack. Eh. :-)
I did a walk-through of a company that blended 10,000 gallons of vodka a week. That same 10,000 gallons was bottled as several labels, from top shelf to bottom shelf, and in glass and plastic bottles of varying sizes. No changes at all from one label/bottle type to another.
The top-shelf stuff went for about $30/bottle and the bottom-shelf stuff was around $12. This was more than a decade ago, so I'm sure the prices have gone up.
Well, being from Tennessee, I always felt an obligation to drink Jack Daniels if I wasn’t drinking what was made back in a hollow along Panther Creek....:o))
You can buy Canadian whiskey cheaper in US than in Canada, taxes on alcohol in Canada is nuts.
I don’t like rye whiskey or blended whiskey. A good single malt scotch from Scotland is my preference and since I rarely drink alcohol I buy the good stuff.
And like another poster said store and drink it cold not warm.
Great story! I also like your tagline!! The way I saw it expressed once was: “The American founders were a bunch of defensive religous gun nuts that despised government intrusion and oppression!!!”
“Canadian Club Reserve 12 year.”
+1
