It’s up to the employer and the contract as to what’s a fireable offense and what isn’t. Even if Wells insulted highly protected blacks or homos he’d still only have received a suspension (by the league, not the team), at most. He was too valuable to the Yanks that year (19 - 7 record).
Great Britain has very different laws about speech
