I like Bell, and enjoy his Abraham Woodhull character on Turn: Washington’s Spies.

Fleming reportedly said Bond, as he envisioned him, looked like Hoagy Carmicael.

Yep.

Someone nondescript.
Neither terribly ugly, nor dashingly handsome.
An everyman, easily overlooked.
A social chameleon who could become charismatic through dress and charming behavior, or invisible through affected dullness.
The perfect spy.

Ian Fleming learned the craft and the requirements during the second world war. He wasn’t imagining a Hollywood heartthrob. He was creating a semi-plausible character.

Jamie Bell is a central leading character in all.

Now there would be a movie. I saw the BBC show from years ago with Sam Neil as Reilly and it was fantastic. Now in his prime I think Sam Neil could have played bond.

Sydney Reilly was one of the greatest real life spies of all time. I read about three books on him and what he did in real life makes James Bond look like an amateur.

As someone else said, Fleming said he pictured Bond as sort of like Hoagy Carmichael.

After he saw “Dr. No” he warmed to Connery and eventually thought he was a good choice.

One thing I will say for Connery, he really did look like he was a tough guy. He just had that look. Craig also has that look but doesn’t look like the image of Bond, that Fleming created.
