"Everyone knows you’re just supposed to crack a window."

Good point. Reminds me of a video I saw yesterday taken by a passenger in Europe who was upset because the "window" and window frame came off in his hands. All he really had was the cosmetic piece of plexiglass that is between you and the real, multi-layer window (that was still perfectly fine), but it still freaked him out. Most people again don't realize that virtually everything you see in an aircraft cabin is cosmetic and not part of the aircraft's structure.

Being in aviation myself, it never ceases to amaze me how fragile the uninitiated believe aircraft to be (because of mislaid fears as I just described). I am also amazed that these same people willingly board aircraft that they seem to think are always on the ragged edge of disaster. They never stop to think that if these machines were as dangerous as they imagine, we would have accidents occurring around the clock, every day.

I was once explaining to a woman how the Air Traffic Control system works and was shocked when I realized what a revelation this was to her. Prior to that discussion, she had thought that pilots just decided where to fly, wild-west style, and that it was just by sheer luck that they got to their destination without hitting anyone else. Why would anyone who believed that EVER step foot inside an aircraft?
