The article is about a pistol. When one adds a shoulder stock to this 'pistol' it becomes a Short Barrel Rifle (SBR) according to the BATFE. (Super simple to do. Push out a pin, put on the stock, pin in place. Less than 30 seconds.)
If one does not register and pay the $200 tax BEFORE doing so, Jail and fines are the potential.

You have to open carry in either a belt or shoulder holster in Texas. Given the shape, drawing would be problematical from a belt holster (imagine trying to sit down with that banana sticking out behind you - maybe something could be designed in a cross draw, but it would have to accommodate the banana.) A shoulder holster might work, but it would be bulky. And let’s face it, the magazine is going to get in the way and complicate the draw however you wear it.
I can see it being popular with ‘aspiring rappers’ for brandishing and drive bys. If that’s the target market, they need to move the sights to the side.

I lived in Michigan, so most of that wouldn’t be possible at the time. I moved to Indiana, where everything is legal, in 1994. FA MP5s were going for 3K back then.

Yeah that banana clip would be an issue if you were carrying it on the street, but I would just get it for the house and keep it in there and the occasional range time.

Which parts did you use in your build?I have been wanting to buy a 9mm upper for my M16 but I keep reading negative things about feed and function.

I own a VP70Z. It’s a terrific pistol, made as a people’s pistol in the event the Cold War turned hot.

I used a standard AR lower with a Haan dedicated mag well block. Upper was a mixture of inexpensive parts and pieces I scraped together from stuff I had, and online purchases. Anderson NOFA sportier stripped upper, 9" barrel. I forget the maker, but someone had them on sale for like $90 ish. Cheap Chinese free float railed handguard, PSA 9mm bolt, KAK 9mm flash can,and a cheap NCStar red dot/laser site. I'm waiting on a stamp for a form 1 suppressor, and will also file for the SBR stamp in a couple weeks. For now, though, it's got a pistol buffer tube on it.
