I also recall the gun was in his hand. The police thought it appeared to be placed in his hand because when there is suicide via a gun, the gun is never in your hand.
Just like Gary Webb, the guy who blew the whistle on the CIA running cocaine in Latin America, was found with two gun shot wounds to the head. Ruled suicide, of course.
