As I remember, it was never explained how he left the White House the day he died. He didn’t sign out and there were no films of him leaving...

I seem to remember the female Sargent on duty in the exit shack who was in charge of filming every vehicle entering/leaving the White House, committed suicide at a motel just off I-95 in South Carolona. The film very continently had been lost, and since the woman was dead she was unable to explain how it got “lost”. The woman’s friends could not explain what she was doing in South Carolina.
