Swarms of Octopus Are Taking Over the Oceans

Something strange is happening to the oceans. As coral reefs wither and fisheries collapse, octopuses are multiplying like mad... cephalopods—squids, octopuses, cuttlefish—are booming, and scientists don’t know why. An analysis published today in Current Biology indicates that numerous species across the world’s oceans have increased in numbers since the 1950s.

“The consistency was the biggest surprise,” said lead study author Zoë Doubleday of the University of Adelaide. “Cephalopods are notoriously variable, and population abundance can fluctuate wildly, both within and among species.”

Calamari is the most popular appetizer where I work. I have no desire to try it.

Two thirds of US fisheries stock are rebounding.
New England Cod fish are lagging, though.

Yummy! Deep fried rubber bands.

When it's the consistency of rubber bands, it's overcooked.

Those deep-fried rings are tasteless. Try it as sashimi in a place where the chef knows enough to score the top of it to make it easier to eat. Actually, it’s still tasteless but has an intriguing texture raw. Some people hate it raw too.

I’m not terribly brave, but our chef made me try a full bite of Ahi tuna seared rare and though I thought I would gag, I absolutely loved it. It’s now my favorite thing on the menu. Squid, though...I just don’t know.
