Same here, the drag race scene. The Chevy in the movie is the same car in Two Lane Blacktop according to George Lucas.

George Lucas first movie was the futuristic sci fi drama, THX 1138. In American Graffiti, the John Milner Coupe bore the reproduced California yellow and black license plate with a tribute to Lucas's movie shortened to the period correct California six digit format in use at the time.
