Given the altitude and airspeed at the point of disappearance the plane, or parts of it, will likely be quite some distance south east of the last know location, which could be in shallower parts of the Med.
Discarding the usual creative but pointless theories, all we know with any degree of certainty is that the plane disappeared suddenly at cruising altitude (or thereabouts) having just entered Egyptian airspace. The rapidity of the event suggests some kind of very sudden 'mechanical' failure - cause unknown. Realistically there are only two broad possibilities; explosive device or a sudden mechanical/structural/engine-type failure.
For some reason I can't help feeling that there is some significance in whatever happened did so just as the flight entered Egyptian airspace.

The problem with a severe malfunction is that pilots could have radioed for help very quickly. They did not. The hundreds of posts are interesting especially form the experienced pilots.
Egypt Air had that plane that ‘disappeared’ out of New York a few years back, Flight 990 in 1999. Something about one of the pilots needing to see Allah prior to landing? To avoid any hint of bias, that Germanwings crash in 2015 was determined to be a suicide by the co-pilot. How do you protect yourself from that nut BEHIND the yoke?
As for this one, it is still too early to know for sure but at least it is not like that Malaysian Air flight in the south Indian Ocean, so far away from everything.
God’s blessings on all of the innocents who have died here.
Are they discussing whether the ACARS transmissions indicate that the trouble all started in or near the cockpit.
If you go by the general pilot rules....once encountering some type of serious emergency where you need to take the plane down in altitude....you make a 90-degree right turn...which is what they did. From that point, no radio contact. I think whatever happened....affected the communications capability of the plane (massive failure). I will predict once they get the boxes back and examine things...the crew probably had 60 seconds or less because they impacted on the water, and their comms were wiped out.
I will note...nothing presents any evidence of a terror act yet. Notice no one is bragging for their organization?
If you have an emergency that requires immediate descent and you are over a large expanse of water with the nearest airport directly in front of you, why do you say the general rule is to first make a 90 degree right turn that takes you further away from land and the nearest airport?
I'm not a pilot, but if my radio was out and I knew I was on someone's radar screen, I might turn just to get someone's attention. Kind of a non-verbal distress call?
Of course, if the plane came apart in mid-air, pieces of it might fly off in any and all direction...
Or a stinger from sinai
So what distress are you signaling by making a controlled 90-degree turn?
Last night an expert on terror address the quietness from the terrorist. He said it was not a good sign That this could be a run through of a new technique. The silence may simply be the terrorist sitting back watching us try to figure out what they had done. He also pointed out a couple of similarities with other plane crashes.
It’s occurence just as plane was being handed off to another country among other things.
"I changed course without your permission. I can't talk to you. Something is wrong."
There was a report that Isis claimed responsibility.
BBC had a aviation expert on, who said if your priority was to get rapid descent (losing cabin pressure), you’d make the 90-degree turn....which is exactly what the Egypt radar guys say they did. Because they never did radio contact....I think they lost full functionality on comms when this whole thing started up.
Of course it is early to ascribe a motivation for the crash.
We will get the usual eyewitnesses who saw the plane on fire, and the eyewitnesses who saw an object from the surface gong up to hit the plane, and the Pilot getting religion and crashing it and just about every theory possible.
As Capt. Obvious would say; This crash needs more time to pass to sort out the facts.
Based on the Malaysian flight disappearance like it or not, CNN will out do FOX in coverage of this disaster. - Tom
There was a report from UK about a month or so about 2 islamic pilots discussing terror attacks on a separate emergency frequency while in flight...both were subsequently tracked and busted.....they forgot that these channels are monitored 24/7 from various locations.
Could be the suicidal pilot communicated his position to someone with a rocket launcher.
That was no aviation expert.
Too high and too far away.
Mr GG2, a pilot and former employee of Boeing says the gyrations of the plane’s final movements have all the earmarks of a wing falling off probably due to an explosion.

Confirmation of terrorism should translate to another 5 point bump for Trump over Hillary.
Yes if this plane blew up Trump is a prophet.
