Beastie Boys original member John Berry has died, according to a report. He was 52. Berry, who is credited with coming up with the bands name, died on Thursday in hospice care at a facility in Danvers, Massachusetts at 7:30 a.m., Rolling Stone reports. The musician's father, John Berry III, told the magazine that his son had battled frontal lobe dementia, which had gotten worse in the past few months. When the band formed in 1981, Berry played as the guitarist, before leaving the group in 1982 after performing on the band's first EP Polly Wog Stew. While Berry was also a member of other bands including Even Worse, Big Fat Love, Highway Stars and Bourbon Deluxe, his original band mates still acknowledged Berry's early work with them when the Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. No information regarding a memorial service has been released.

The miserable year for musicians continues. Keith Richards better be extra careful this year.
frontal lobe dementia setting in while still only in his 40’s? and dead by 52?
very odd....(drugs????? or what?)
Keith will outlive the cockroaches after a nuclear war.
Didn’t Mike D or MCA die of cancer several years ago? Damn group rocked
If it’s drugs, it’s got to be pretty MAJOR drugs.
RIP, John Berry.
So he was in the punk version of the band?
Obama silent on passing of MCA

Frontal Lobe Dementia at 52? Wow. I have heard of them, but never quite got into this group. There were other punk rockers at the time. They ushered in a style though.
My guess is what would be the stereotypic outcome for many rockers; He did lots of drugs years ago, and hastened his own decline.
MCA
RIP.
Sabotage may be my favorite music video of all time.
Beastie Boys weren’t punk. They were probably the very first band to fuse rock with hip hop.
There’s tons and tons of musicians that didn’t die from disease, drugs or alcohol. We know Bowie died of Cancer, I don’t think Prince’s cause of death was released yet. Alvin Lee of Ten Years After died of complications after stomach surgery. Ronnie James Dio of Black Sabbath, Rainbow and Dio died from stomach cancer. Clive Burr of Iron Maiden died from MS. Stevie Ray Vaughan died in a helicopter crash (this after getting sober) when he was 35.
The “rock star” lifestyle is much too glorified.
Sounds like just a very bad draw of the cards. Early onset dementia can happen. I don’t think drug use causes it. But I’m certainly no MD.
My husband worked with a guy that unfortunately died of the same thing at the age of 50. Good guy with young kids. We never know. :(

either way, what a shame!
I don’t really call it punk, but I think represents The Beasties at their peak -

A real good friend of mine died of it recently. He was in his 40’s and was diagnosed in his late 30’s. It was miserable and torturous. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemies. A real good guy who was a real straight arrow (no drugs). His dad gave the eulogy - not a dry eye in the church.
