Because of VAs open primaries, the GOP has been trying to get a loyalty oath for decades. In unfortunate timing, they finally achieved it at the same time there was the brouhaha about candidates qualifying to be on the ballot.
Open primaries make primary results impossible to decipher. Ive seen neighbors vote in GOP primaries, who will later post the Dems posters on their yard.
Open primaries also make determining who the GOP voters are in the precincts impossible. If you dont know the people personally, you are stuck as a precinct chairman. The best the local party can do is provide the names of those who voted in GOP primaries, so youre still stuck with the cross-overs who are generally the most hard-core Dems.

There’s quite a difference between a) ending open primaries and b) having delegates to the convention not vote for the candidate the people they purportedly represent voted for. I’m in favor of the former, not the latter.
