They could have shipped that animal to a refuge instead of killing it.

I don't think NPS rangers/biologists are itching to start capping people simply because they euthanized a wild animal.

The calf was apparently rejected by its herd. The herd at a refuge would not just arbitrarily accept it, and it would probably have to be taken care of personally by the staff of the refuge. With the problem of housing, feeding, and taking care of the animal until finding a location willing to take it (if there is a place that could make an opening for a lone calf that would require extra care), unfortunately, euthanizing it was likely the only reasonable option.
