When none other than Eric Johnson has a song entitled “A Tribute to Jerry Reed”, you know he must have been a damned good guitarist.

Looking forward to it. One of my favorite Jerry Reed pieces is “Guitar Man,” originally recorded with Elvis.

There are a lot of talented musicians around. You just have to use your own judgment to identify instrumental virtuosity,

I've never been especially into country music, but as far as I can tell, this guy is one of the best pedal steel guitar players ever. He's not even American, but lives in the UK. Although he is obviously more than talented enough to be a professional musician, he has a regular job working for Coke. He's been playing this instrument for over 35 years. Since I first head him I've tried to listen to several of the other supposedly greatest players and none of them is as good.

Actually meant to link to this video. (Same guy; his name is David Hartley.) He also plays all the instruments on his backing tracks.

“From the backdoor of your life you swept me out dear,
“In the bread line of your dreams I lost my place.
“At the table of your love I got the brush off,
“At the Indianapolis of your heart I lost the race.

“I’ve been washed down the sink of your conscience (glurp),
“In the theater of your love I lost my part.
“And now you say you’ve got me out of your conscience,
“I’ve been flushed from the bathroom of your heart.

“In the garbage disposal of you dreams I’ve been ground up, dear,
“On the river of your plans I’m up the creek.
“Up the elevator of your future I’ve been shafted,
“On the calendar of your events I’m just last week.

“I’ve been washed down the sink of your conscience,
“In the theater of your love I lost my part.
“And now you say you’ve got me out of your conscience,
“I’ve been...”

Caught one duet on ytube of this song with Jerry Reed, and then Dollie Parton singing the “second verse” response ...

The song was written by Tim Dubois, who was teaching accounting at Vanderbilt's Owen School of Management when I went there. I caught his last class, before he quit teaching to go into the music business full time. He was definitely one of the more interesting and entertaining teachers I ever had. He also wrote Love in the First Degree performed by Alabama.
