What a waste of time reading this article. The writer thinks he is being clever claiming if open borders is defined as zero immigration controls than none of the GOP favors open borders. About as effective as Willie's argument about the definition of "is". Only one wants to look at the Gang of 8 monstrosity. It would of tripled the number of legal immigrants per year so presto illegal entrants would be made legal.

Anything coming out of the National RINOreview, these days, is a waste of time reading.

Ryan supported the Gang of 8 bill. He is for amnesty and increased guest workers. When you reward something, you get more of it.

Yes, I saw all of those roadblocks that Ryan threw up to block Obama’s attempts to eviscerate America’s immigration process. /sarcasm

Okay, Ian, you're right. The label "Open Borders" doesn't actually mean that the representative never ever votes for a single border-control issue. Here's a pat on the head, and a cookie. Good job.

You'll forgive us if we continue to use the term, to help us differentiate between those who actually work hard for rigorous border enforcement and those who do not, yes? Reminder, Paul Ryan said, late last year, "I do NOT support rounding up and deporting illegal immigrants". Ryan was instrumental in blocking an effort to reduce immigration in the 1990’s. In DEC, Speaker Ryan ushered through Congress an omnibus spending bill that completely funded President Obama’s still-running 2012 executive amnesty for DREAMers. gave federal grants to sanctuary cities, funded the resettlement of illegal aliens within the United States, the release of criminal aliens, and tax credits for illegal aliens... and yet that same omnibus failed to provide funding for the mandatory completion of a 700-mile double-layer border fence that Congress promised the American people with the 2006 Secure Fence Act. Ryan’s omnibus funded an expansion of immigration levels. Ryan’s spending bill funded an expansion of Muslim migration, and expanded a controversial low-skilled H-2B guest worker program. (Sen. Tom Cotton declared that this provision was a direct violation of Ryan’s pledge not to bring up major immigration legislation while President Obama was still in office.)

Among the Right, he is pretty far-Left on immigration, and thus we will use that label on him. Sorry, Ian!

Trump is the only sane man in American politics.

If we don’t have a border, we don’t have a country.

If paying lip service (intentionally meaningless votes, half-measures...) to border enforcement amounts to being against “open borders” then the author is correct. But he is missing, perhaps intentionally if he is bright enough, the reality that the GOP Establishment, including hacks like Ryan, have consistently voted for border enforcement but only in the context of measures that they knew in advance would never pass and/or be implemented.

Why? Because they are internationalists (don’t really believe in borders), think that freedom of immigration is a basic human right and good for the economy, think border enforcement is bad politics, are trying to keep their donors happy.... IDK, there are likely many variations in reasoning.

Securing the border alone is not enough. We need zero talk of amnesty for the 25+million already here, interior enforcement and whacking off the freebie magnets.

Paul Ryan is not for open borders. In the Year of Donald Trump, these are fighting words. They are also true. On his campaign website, the speaker of the House lists four principles that he believes should guide any attempt to reform our immigration system, among which are: “First, we need to secure the border,” and, “Second, we need to enforce our laws.” Ryan has called illegal immigration “an affront to the rule of law and an unacceptable security risk.” He voted for the “Secure Fence Act of 2006,” which aimed “to establish operational control over the international land and maritime borders of the United States.”

The myth that a candidate's words on his website counter the plain evidence of his actions in a so-called leadership position is alive and well.
