How 'Taxi Driver' ruined acting
The Economist ^ | 5/6/2016 | TOM SHONE

“Every day, for 40 f%^&% years, one of you has stopped me on the street and said, ‘You talkin’ to me?’” groused Robert De Niro at a recent Q&A at the Tribeca Film festival reuniting the makers of “Taxi Driver”. Martin Scorsese, Harvey Keitel, Jodie Foster, Cybil Shepherd and screenwriter Paul Schrader all swapped anecdotes, and De Niro led the audience in one last rendition of his most famous line, in an effort to expunge the ghost. He’s not the only one haunted by the role, which remains the template for every young Hollywood actor eager to put the lucre of blockbuster dollars behind them with a walk on the indie wild side: Christian Bale in “The Machinist”, Ryan Gosling in “Drive”, Sam Rockwell in “Seven Psychopaths”, in which he plays an actor who believes himself to be the illegitimate son of Travis Bickle. They all believe that. “‘Taxi Driver’ is the ultimate independent-movie performance,” Leonardo DiCaprio has said. “Playing a character like Travis Bickle is every young actor’s wet dream.”

Mask the reality - they reveled in it!

True. That was a poor choice of words on my part. That generation of filmmakers was going for gritty realism/naturalism.

Because of that scene alone? Remember it’s a quintessential New Hollwyood film. There is no coherent narrative or likable characters.

The Coen Brothers love Taxi Driver. Guaranteed.

The best lines in DC Cab came right at the end ...

"I am the Angel of Death. Take me to Hell!"
"Got any luggage?"

Funny, as I skimmed through the excerpt, I thought, “I have not seen a single one of these movies, and I have not even heard of some of them.” I am not missing a thing, IMO.

The entire article is about only one movie (others mentioned as a brief side note). And if you haven’t seen it you are missing out. It’s an American classic.

Regardless of how one views Deniro's acting, Taxi Driver is one very ugly and despiritng film.

I lived in the city at the time. All-too accurate portrayal.

I agree so much.

Like I mentioned, I saw this as a KID, yet I understood how awesome it is.

As an adult I now "get" the brilliance.

When DeNiro is talking to Cybil Shepherd in the lobby of the hotel, the camera pans to the scene of Travis speaking, yet he is all alone in that cold, desolate hallway.

Reflecting Travis' isolation.

Sure it's been done a zillion times since then, but Scorsese nails it.

Everything that comes after this film, but attempts to imitate it, fails.

Yes you are. You’re welcome. I look forward to hearing about the classic literature you’re proud to have not read.

After all the hype about this movie, I was really looking forward to seeing it. What a big letdown. I kept waiting for the movie to get interesting, but it never happened. As with most bad movies, I quickly forgot this one too. I couldn’t tell you the plot or much anything else about it.

A decent movie is one you don’t want to end and think about long after seeing it. I did neither with Taxi Driver.
