Dogs Hate Hugs, Study Suggests

If you love your dogs, you should hug them, right?

Wrong.

In an article published in Psychology Today, psychology professor and neuropsychological researcher Stanley Coren argues that most dogs are actually stressed out by hugs.

The study analyzed 250 Internet photos of people hugging their dogs, scanning for for known signs of anxiety in the dog, including turning their head away, showing the whites of the eyes and slicked back ears.

Coren's data revealed that 82 percent of dogs in the photos showed at least one of those signs of stress. About 8 percent of dogs seemed happy with the hug and the remaining 10 percent appeared neutral or showed an ambiguous response toward the gesture.

When they wanted a hug, my mini-dachshunds would sharply push up my elbow with their noses.

I’ve fostered over 90 animals for the local animal rescue and every so often we get one that’s unadoptable. I end up keeping them. One of them is a German Shepherd named Kurt. We don’t know his history, but he use to go nuts if he felt like he was being restrained. He had serious trust issues. We were at an adoption event with him once and a woman ran up and tried to hug him and he snapped at her.

We had a trainer come in and give us some advice on training him. My adult daughter started by giving him short hugs in the morning and rewarding him for not killing her. After a few months he got to the point where he runs up to us and wants a hug.

He’s only like that with family, though. When we go to the vet for blood work it takes four vet techs to restrain him. They tie him to a hook on the wall, put a muzzle on him, and three techs hold him down while one takes blood.

“They can’t hug you back, it’s awkward.”

Oh, yes they can, in their own way. I have two Australian Shepherds and the female is extremely affectionate. If I am standing, she will wrap her paw around my leg as a hug. If I am sitting, she will wrap her paw around my arm. When she is in the mood, she invites me to give her a full body hug that can last several minutes. She sits and leans against me when we are on the sofa, or lays across my lap. My boy dog loves to be petted, but not restrained.

I’ve had dogs that like hugs, so I didn’t hug them. I’ve had dogs that demanded hugs, so I hugged them.

The kitties present and past wanted to part of hugs. Giving or receiving.

We're not sure what happened to him before we got him, but it caused some serious trust issues.

I have a Pit bull, Lab mix that loves hugs. He wakes me up in the morning with a hug and song. No matter how bad I feel it makes me laugh.
