I think it is because dogs are the best teachers of what unconditional love is:
"“When someone you love walks through the door, even if it happens five times a day, you should go totally insane with joy.”
Also there is this, if the lowly dog can show such unconditional love, then despite our disbelief at times how easy it must be for out Maker to do the same.
