Incredibly, music-mad bootleggers found an extraordinary way to copy illegal gramophone records of Western jazz, rock 'n' roll and forbidden Russian music – they built homemade recording machines and used X-ray film as the base for their illegal recordings.

Google “A Firsthand Look at the Soviet Union”, Thomas T. Hammond, 1958.

The first official postwar tourist to the USSR, Dr. Hammond described this recording method used by Moscow university students, including one who said, “That’s Glenn Miller’s `Moonlight Serenade’ on one side, with a compound fracture on the other!”
