PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A new study suggests that long-term use of common heartburn medications could cause serious kidney damage.

Researchers believe one specific class of drugs can increase the risk of kidney disease, and failure.

That includes popular brands like Prilosec, Nexium, and Prevacid, which are all available over the counter.

“Yep. Without my Prilosec I can get reflux from water”

You’re the only other person I’ve ever heard say that. I can get it from nothing at all and ended up in the hospital for dehydration because I couldn’t even swallow my saliva much less a drink or food. A benzodiazapine injection fixed the dysphagia problem, though, so there was an emotional component involved besides the acid.

A teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water

You get your A in chemistry class for that simple solution.

My Late B-I-L had Esophageal Cancer.

He lasted five Years after the heinous Surgery.

I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy.

No emotional component here. I have a hiatal hernia and GIRD. I got it worse after going through chemo. Together they were killing me. Now I can eat and drink darn near anything thanks to Prilosec.

Am I gonna die?

Well, we're all gonna die but probably not from Prilosec.

From study: Few study patients -- less than 0.2 percent -- developed end-stage kidney failure.

As far as I know, Rx Prilosec comes in 20-40 mg capsules.

You must be taking one of the other proton pump inhibitors.

We use the baking soda in water also. It works well. I also take pepcid which is supposed to be OK but I don’t take it everyday.

Pepcid has famotidine which I mentioned earlier. It is probably the most sophisticated of the h2 blockers.
