Saffron Colonial: Controversial North Portland restaurant changes name

A North Portland restaurant that sparked outrage, protests and drew criticism for weeks for its historical associations with English colonialism has changed its name.

The month-old Saffron Colonial, opened by Portland native Sally Krantz, will now be known as the British Overseas Restaurant Corporation, or "BORC" for short.

--

Controversy quickly broke out over the Saffron Colonial name and menu, which included a Plantation Punch. At least two protests gathered outside the restaurant, hoping to force Krantz to change the name. Vendors such as Ristretto Roasters and Steven Smith Teamaker cut ties with the restaurant.

---

In an email Friday, Krantz shared why she changed the restaurant's name:

My intention in opening this restaurant was not to be divisive, exclusionary or hierarchal. I have no interest in recreating colonialism, racial prejudice or bias.

My journey has always pointed towards inclusion, discussion and sharing of all viewpoints. I have spent 20 years traveling and absorbing lots of different cultures, not just through business, but also through literature, architecture, art, and of course, food. As a chef, this is critical. My direction in life has always been about exploring and celebrating other cultures, learning about them and trying to express this co-mingling through food.

Clearly the name Saffron Colonial did not convey this, but rather became divisive, which was not the intent. I have never had a problem changing the name, but also wanted to take some time to develop the right name. I feel B.O.R.C. reflects both what I am trying to do with the food and will not separate us, but will hopefully allow us to move forward together.

So Saffron Colonial smacks of English colonialism but British Overseas Restaurant Company doesn’t? He should just call their bluff and call it The Raj.

I wonder what they will start calling Colonial style homes. Selling real estate in some areas of the country might get rather difficult.

Atlantis and Mighty Quinn are still two of my favorites.

in Southern California we used to have “ Soup Plantation” restaurants. I moved to live a quieter, less diverse life, and out here, they are called “Sweet Tomatoes,” because you can’t say “plantation.” Same restaurants, same company.

Yeah...

I knew a guy who ferried my company across rivers (I built flotation bridges), and maybe someone here will know who he was, but his nickname was “Mellow Yellow”

He got sent home (which means he got killed) in the summer of 68 or 69, and we all knew him as Mellow Yellow.

I never knew his real name, and didn’t care really, I never talked to the guy, and sh*t like that didn’t matter to me until now, as I’m older, now when people say odd things, totally unrelated, I think “what the fuck? I’m 70? What the fuck? Where did it all go? This guy’s been dead for 50 years!” And I wonder sometimes who the f*ck else remembers “Mellow Yellow” and the trips on his LST.

No one now even knows what an LST is. Much less who Mellow Yellow was. I swear, I’m turning into my father, and I’ve had way too many beers. I’m up here alone in my cabin till Sunday, my dad’s cabin, and I’m just feeling like shit, and all that Mellow Yellow just came out, shit I just held back for 50 years.

Man, it’s a kick in the nut sack.

So f whoever is going to get on my ass.

Rock on Mellow Yellow where ever you may be.

I didn’t know you, but man, I REMEMBER you.

I have to go to bed now, but I got 3 more Old Style beers, because what panzy can’t drink a 12 pack of beer?

Why don’t they just name their establishment “Restaurant 2016” or some number. This is what it is going to end up being anyway. This is getting beyond ridiculous. Everybody needs to just suck it up. If they do not like the name of something, just do not patronize it. How hard is that?

Nope, can’t name them by number. That would be hierarchical.

Seriously, I think we need to do this: Give the left a week to list every conceivable grievance they have, large and small. Our response is to double down on every single one of them.

“Actually, I’m not. She’s nice, but I married my wife. They used to ride down here together, my wife to visit me when we were dating, Fontaine to visit her boyfriend.”

You knew Marianne Faithful?

There was a whole awdy version about it being a fourteen year old girl...

I am guessing 2 or 3 BLM thugs from the local college, who will NEVER eat there, never had intentions of eating there, and never will eat there regardless, caused all this. If it were my place I’d hire ONLY black waiters and let them have at it. IMagine that. Employing black folks exclusively.

2016 somehow sounds racist. That won't do.

Is there any hope at all that rugged individualism could make a comeback? Can the psych ward that is now the once mighty USA be saved?

Don’t ever name your place of business “The Black Hole” that will for sure get you shut down.

I somehow don’t think that will fly with the snowflakes, either.

It’s a stretch to be offended by “plantation”, but I’m must be completely missing what the problem with “saffron” is....

Waiting for the (colonial) furniture burning to begin ...

I can just see some lib chick meeting her beau’s parents for the first time (if they still do such a thing) and running screaming from the house because they have colonial furniture.

Oregon libs may not mind that name, but conservatives will be reminded about how "Bork" became a verb back in the day.

Screw Portland. It’s now on my don’t ever vist list.

Some of us are old enough to remember there were lots of places that were better off as British colonies that have now turned into Third World crapholes.
