Since you brought up your service here is my noob story from the Marine Corps.
My first NCO call that I went to my roommate showed up. He had no ribbons or service strips and the other NCO’s were giving him crap because he had the sharpshooter rifle badge. He quickly pointed out to them that I only had the marksman badge. I was the only one there besides my roommate without anything on their uniform and I had the worst shooting badge.
But I guess I was promoted because I was smart not there a long time. Kind of like some of the noobs here I guess. I dont even have ten years here.
I posted an article with “hompsexuality” in the title that got a few sarcastic replies. haha

I am coming up on 10th anniversary, but I was 2 years here and we came into the ‘08 election and it was pretty hot and heavy. I worked on this damn story for a looong time about Jennifer Brunner and finally it started to get attention. I was very excited about it all. Found one of the post here;

Turns out this screen name fits me just right.
It was fairly standard for FNGs in a Tomcat squadron be given a Maverick or Goose name tag until the wardroom could decide on a campaign. One of the squadrons I was in gave the FNGs either a Clam or Dilly nametag. They were two former squadron members that were hated.
I was a noob so long ago, I don’t even remember any of it.
FNG? Frigid natural gas as opposed to liquid natural gas. Not as transportable.

When I first came on Free Republic, I introduced myself. Clarity (since banned, and once Free Republic’s lawyer) told me to shut my yap and try to contribute something content-wise to the forum.
I guess that was 1999’s version of being called a n00b.
The CHENG's first words were to ask me if I had all my uniforms with me. I said that they were in my car. He told me to go check into the Bachelor Officer's quarters. I was NOT to actually go to my room but wait for the ship's driver to come get me. I was to bring my uniforms and any valuables back to the ship.
45 minutes later PO Jones and fireman Schmedlap (not their real names) picked me up. 30 minutes after returning to the ship we got under way for a week with me on the bridge as Junior Officer of the Deck (JOOD) under instruction. 30 minutes after we cleared the outer marker the Officer of the Deck (OOD) tells me to report to the Goat Locker (Chief's quarters) and sends to messenger of the watch to show me where it was.
I knew better than to enter the Chief's quarters without knocking. Even the Captain knocks and requests permission to enter. I quickly found out why I was there. I was to act as defense council for a Lieutenant being initiated as an honorary chief. He had been selected for Chief before getting his commission but never had a Chief's initiation.
Talk about getting thrown into the deep end of the Navy. I come from a Navy family and knew to play along with what ever they told me to do. All went well. Evidently the Chiefs thought I was a good sport about the whole thing as they went out of their way to help me for the 2 months I was there. I learned a lot and appreciated my Navy schools more.
Later when I was a Lieutenant myself and had two members of my division make Chief. The Chiefs wanted me to be the defense council for them. When they learned I had already done it I got to sit next to the CO while my numerical replacement played defense council.
