These stories seem to have been common knowledge among the "in crowd". They were going to come out sooner or later. If Ted is totally innocent he sues National Enquirer and will have no problem proving so. He then gets a multi million dollar settlement and is completely exonerated.
Unless of course they are true.

Refer to that tale of Gary Hart, who in 1987 was running for the nomination to the Presidency on the Democrat ticket, after narrowly losing to Walter Mondale in 1984 for the same objective.
The Miami Herald was pursuing various rumors about Hart and Donna Rice, and the aptly named yacht, “Monkey Business”, where one of Hart’s dalliances occurred. On May 3, 1987, the Herald broke the story with pictures. Five days after the Herald story broke, Hart withdrew from the race. Left behind were questions touching on subjects ranging from journalistic ethics to the place of adultery in American politics.
Tabloid reporting on US politics was forever elevated to the determining factor in elections.
Cruz knew this was coming.
That should tell people all they need to know.
He blames Trump to try and deflect his terrible behavior.
That makes Cruz a far worse person than just a serial adulterer.
I’m also reading that the GOP knew about the allegations for six months. Interesting how they have all been coming out of the woodwork to endorse Cruz in spite of it. The GOP has no intention of allowing either candidate to be the nominee

The way a tabloid makes its money is by weighing each story's risk/reward.
The risk of a story like this--legal liability, that is--is huge so you can be sure extra due diligence was exercised to test its authenticity.
Furthermore, the Gawker/Hulk Hogan verdict would send a chilling note to all publishers of potentially damaging stories.

And on a personal level, Pecker certainly doesn’t want to make a martyr of Cruz after the ‘slut-shame’ photo.

No. I suspect that the affairs are real and Cruz knew that it was about to come out. The Trump attack was a cynical diversionary ploy to take out Trump at the same time.
