Dengue vaccine proves 100% effective in human trials

An experimental vaccine against the dengue virus has been found to protect 100 percent of recipients in a clinical trial carried out by the USA's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

In the NIAID trial 21 people were vaccinated with TV003, while 20 received a placebo. Six months later they returned to be infected with a mild version of dengue-2. All 21 people who'd received the vaccine were protected against infection. All 20 members of the placebo group contracted dengue. A modified version of the vaccine is now being developed in an attempt to treat the related Zika virus.

TV003 is a live attenuated vaccine, meaning that, like measles, mumps, and flu vaccines, it's made by creating a greatly weakened version of the virus it's designed to combat. Specifically, this vaccine involves a combination of four recombinant dengue vaccine candidate viruses, designed to combat all four major dengue virus serotypes.

The volunteers who received the vaccine experienced no ill effects from it and developed only a mild rash, which they didn't notice and which vanished entirely in five to ten days. All subjects successfully developed antibodies against dengue.

Dengue virus is related to Zika and both are primarily spread by the Aedes mosquito.

Very good news. I’ve had “bone break fever”. Very painful and nasty.

“there are NO 100% effective vaccine”

In a small sample such as this, 100% of the sample is a valid statement.

Yes it is for those- in countries where it’s prevalent- I knew someone who contracted it and it was awful- Hopefully someday they can come up with a lyme disease vaccine too

“Hopefully someday they can come up with a lyme disease vaccine too’

I would love to see that. It is epidemic in Northern Wisconsin.

Most of my relatives there have had it, and it can have long term problems and effects.

It’s fantastic news. It’s an awful disease and unlike other diseases it gets worse every time it comes back.

My daughter was hospitalised with it and given the severity it was assumed it was her second bout. Now I am terrified that she might get infected again with calamitous results.

It turns out a safe and effective Lyme’s vaccine has already been deveoloped, marketed without ill effects, and taken off the market due to anti-vaccine activism!!!

This is absolutely horrible.

I am appalled that this happened.

Very good news. Two years ago in June, I had dengue fever, tropica malaria and a kidney infection all at once. As part of the dengue side effects all the skin pealed off my hands and feet, my hair fell out, and I have had repeated serious headaches ever since. Still feeling the headaches and my hair has not completely regrown.

I do not want to try the fever again.

Well if those peopel didn’t want to use it, they should avoid it- but they shouldn’t ban others from getting it if they want-
