This is totally fascinating! A friend in Manila just forwarded me a link to www.sulit.com in Manila. This website is apparently the Craigslist of the Philippines. H said look at the prices of iPhones! Sure enough, I looked and iPhone 2S prices, which he said have been hovering around 45,000 Pesos (about 1000 US at todays exchange rate) are about 15,000 Pesos, and there are a LOT of them listed at that!

Apparently, my friend says, the Filipinos are following the FBI story about forcing Apple to unlock their encryption, are afraid the FBI will prevail, and don't want a phone the FBI can tap.

This is so rich on so many fronts! How the FBI can cause prices of iPhones to tank, the fear of Filipinos that the FBI can read what they have on their phones (And maybe share with the Philippine police or or politicians,) the fact that Android is no more secure but Apple phones tank, international trade in that if you want a cheap latest model iPhone, you can buy one in Manila and get a free vacation to pick it up.... Oh the irony of Mr. Comey, FBI Director, going against free speech. Can you imagine him telling me I cannot speak to my Latina girlfrend in an language except English?

And we expect Director Comey to be fair in his application of the law in the Hillary server case. Oh, I mourn for my America, but I have to laugh at the unexpected consequences for not following the Constitution.

Ping to the Apple list for fun and education. Airfares are such that you can get a new iPhone and a free trip to Manila to pick it up for the price of an iPhone in Honolulu. Amazing!

Well that is the interesting thing. Either there are a lot of terrorists in Manila, or just a lot of Filipinos are afraid of what they have on their iPhones might become public.

Good lord. I do not support the FBI in this case, but no one cares about the risque pics on your phone, Filipinos. The fact that this would cause them to not buy an iPhone speaks to that culture’s level of silliness, rumor-mongering, and superstition.

Wow. Fascinating indeed that "you looked". Especially since Sulit.com has not been active for more than a year. They merged last year with OLX.ph, which is the mainline online ad place here isn the Philippines, WHERE I LIVE. Craigslist is also here, but not used very much. Ayosdito and Sulit were both merged with OLX.

A quick search of the OLX site does not back up your premise. All I see are iPhone 5 and 6 with an occasional 4! I can buy an iPhone 6 for 15-25000PhP (iPhone 6Plus with 128g for 24500PhP)(current exchange rate of 47.115)

https://www.olx.ph/all-results/q-iPhone-2/

So, I believe your piece is nothing more than FUD!

Then there's that, probably.

What does the Apple iPhone case have to do with free speech?

It might have something to do with the right of the People to be secure in their persons, homes, papers and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures, except the search and seizure of the papers and effects of Muslim terrorists is eminently REASONABLE.

Oh there are lots of terrorists there. A sizeable Muslim population, 14%, over 10 million Muslims there.

“The fact that this would cause them to not buy an iPhone speaks to that culture’s level of silliness, rumor-mongering, and superstition.”

Not to mention they are one of the worlds chief suppliers of kiddie porn and NAMBLA Holidays. That might also have something to do with being worried about giving up “privacy rights.”

“One of the most worrisome findings is the link between local producers and networks of pornographers operating overseas for the purposes of distributing child pornography over the Internet. The study was commissioned by UNICEF and conducted by the Programme on Psychosocial Trauma and Human Rights of the University of the Philippines Center for Integrative and Developmental Studies (UP CIDS).”

You are correct. My friend did not get the link right. it is OLX.PH, but I looked at this link:

Actually, to to olx.ph and search for iphone 6 Plus. There are many around that price. I can't find the URL on the page, it is hidden somehow, probably to prevent people from linking to it. This is not FUD, or I would not report.

Just curious, why do you live in the Filippines? Are you retired over there? My friend likes it apparently, he has been there more than a year.

The FBI is going to tell me I cannot speak to my foreign born GF in any language they do not know. That is not right. I understand your feelings about terrorists, but we have to be careful not to use this as a cloak to take away our freedom of speech.

Well that is a reason not to go there. I thought they were all in Indonesia.

Just ran my Iphone 4 through the washing machine last night. Anybody know if/how data on it can be recovered. Contacts, photos, videos etc?

68, retired and living well. With that exchange rate, followed by a lower cost-of-living, I can live much better here. Add to that my 31 year old Filipina wife, and my good life becomes a GREAT life.

I rent a 2 bedroom house, two blocks from the beach, for 5000PhP per month. that is slightly more than $100. All together, I have satellite TV, high speed internet, electric, water (3rd best water system in the world), food (fresh fish and veggies in the markets???), and Davao is one of the SAFEST cities in the World.

It is more fun in the Philippines!

Happens quite a bit
If it was turned off when it was washed, and you did not turn it back on, there is good chance that drying it in the sun for a few hours will dry it out. If that doesn’t work, the Apple store unless there is a Geek near you. Check the classified.

I don't think the Fourth Amendment is relevant to this case. There was no warrant issued, because Apple has nothing to seize. The FBI has the phone and are free to search it as they choose.
