Donald Trump Secretly Told The New York Times What He Really Thinks About Immigration
Buzzfeed ^ | 2/29/2016 | Ben Smith

Posted on 02/29/2016 12:47:40 PM PST by TheThirdRuffian

The New York Times is sitting on an audio recording that some of its staff believes could deal a serious blow to Donald Trump who, in an off-the-record meeting with the newspaper, called into question whether he would stand by his own immigration views.

Trump visited the paper’s Manhattan headquarters on Tuesday, Jan. 5, part of a round of editorial board meetings that — as is traditional — the Democratic candidates for president and some of the Republicans attended. The meetings, conducted partly on the record and partly off the record in a 13th floor conference room, give candidates a chance to make their pitch for the paper’s endorsement.

After a dispute over Trump’s suggestion of tariffs on Chinese goods, the Times released a portion of the recording. But that was from the on-the-record part of the session.

n Saturday, columnist Gail Collins, one of the attendees at the meeting (which also included editor-in-chief Dean Baquet), floated a bit of speculation in her column:

The most optimistic analysis of Trump as a presidential candidate is that he just doesn’t believe in positions, except the ones you adopt for strategic purposes when you’re making a deal. So you obviously can’t explain how you’re going to deport 11 million undocumented immigrants, because it’s going to be the first bid in some future monster negotiation session.

Sources familiar with the recording and transcript — which have reached near-mythical status at the Times — tell me that the second sentence is a bit more than speculation. It reflects, instead, something Trump said about the flexibility of his hard-line anti-immigration stance.

So what exactly did Trump say about immigration, about deportations, about the wall? Did he abandon a core promise of his campaign in a private conversation with liberal power brokers in New York?

Well, if he lies, then we put the heat on Congress and the threat of voting every one out of office two years later.
It isn’t like we don’t have recourse.

Thanks for letting me know I hadn’t missed something-all I really knew about who was in 13th Floor Elevator was what a co-worker from Center Point told me awhile back-one of the former band members was shot to death in the late 70’s and is buried in Center Point-he was blown away by his wife in a domestic dispute, and the founder, Rocky Erikson is still a lunatic-he has been mentally ill since his teens supposedly-his brother has been his legal guardian most of that time-but their music was good acid/psychedelic rock...

No one does.

But it would just summarily dismiss this, either.

I have no copy of the tape or the transcript but Ben Smith told reporters off the record he enjoys sex with small children and farm animals.

And Donald gets the benefit of the doubt on this until such tape materializes. It is the media, after all

For now, it’s speculation.

Let’s see Cruz’s FULL tax returns (he did not release the schedules, which we’ll need to determine how much Goldman Sachs is bribing them.) AND Cruz must release his CRB

Of course. The cruzies can dish it out but not take it. They demand tax returns from opponents. Then only release partial returns and file an extension to hide the past year completely.

Trump is an outer borough guy. He is from Jamaica, Queens.

He is an Archie Bunker kind of guy. Rich, perhaps, but rich is relative.

If you have a negative attitude, your wealth doesn't matter.

If you have a positive attitude, you are rich even if your bank account doesn't attest to it.

Happy folks are rich and moneyed rich but miserably folk are poop...and Hell is filled with them.

There is no truth - it’s the NYT. All they need to do is create doubt in your mind, and it seems to be working. They are one of the most dishonest newspapers out there - all in the tank for Hillary. Are you or are you not aware of that fact? If not, then I suggest you educate yourself.

No problem there. Trump himself has put plenty of doubt in my mind. His past liberal positions are too blatant to ignore.

“The most optimistic analysis of Trump as a presidential candidate is that he just doesn’t believe in positions...”

That make him NO WORSE than Cruz, and still BETTER than Rubio.

Considering the way that he is BRINGING THE GOPe TO THEIR KNEES, why should I change horses?

I know that if I was spending millions of dollars of my own money to fly all over the country and lie to people about stuff, the ONE STOP I would make and tell the truth at is the New York Times building. Because, er, well, I dunno. But I would, apparently.

Besides, the Times can’t release the tape until they are finished recording it. They are still going through all of those YouTube videos clipping words out.

In his Hannity interview last night:

"They said you said it's negotiable on the wall," said Hannity.

Trump did not miss a step. "It's negotiable," he said. "Things are negotiable. I'll be honest with you -- I'll make the wall two feet shorter, or something. I mean, everything's negotiable."

"It's not negotiable to build it?" asked Hannity.

"No!" said Trump. "Building it? Not negotiable."

"Would it be negotiable about the 11 million?" asked Hannity, referring to the frequently cited estimate of undocumented immigrants living in the United States. "Maybe let some people stay if they register in a period of time?"

"I would say this," said Trump. "I've always said, look, we have some great people over here. And they're going to go out, but we're going to work out a system that's fair."

How long will it be? And how high? Everything's negotiable.

Being a squishy moderate hurt Romney in the General Election. Millions of the base stayed home.

Trump is a squishy moderate, or actually, a liberal. Here’s just one example:

“Trump has long praised Mitch McConnell, the man who is the embodiment of why people are fed up with the party and attracted to Trump in the first place. While conservatives were fighting to get rid of McConnell in the 2014 primaries, Trump said, “It would be a shame if he didn’t win, because he has such power, it’s so good for his state.”

It comes as no surprise, then, that late last year Trump criticized Cruz for acting like a “maniac” when he called McConnell a liar. How does Trump plan to fight political correctness and the culture of the D.C. establishment when he has championed the mastermind of the GOP establishment and is offended by the non-politically correct criticism of its leader?”

Mr. Trump says the wall will have a WIDE door. What do you think that means?

Here’s a clue:

“We are not talking about positions he has taken years ago before he became a Republican. In 2013, conservatives were fighting for dear life to oppose open borders, while Trump was not only supporting the Dream Act, but echoing the liberal politically correct talking points behind it. In August of 2013, he reportedly told a group of illegal aliens, “You have convinced me” of the need to pass the Dream Act.”
