My opinion is that if you look at the political professional class in the GOP, they are pretty awful and not the sort any elite worth his/her salt wants working for them. I think also that they have picked sides and interfered a few times too many. They are in short a liability to all of us, elite and unwashed masses alike. My hope is that we can lose these nitwits and get back to common sense.

I don’t expect everything to go my way, but I do expect leadership to have the good sense to not usher in a new Dark Age!

I am sad to say that I mostly agree with your view. On more than one occasion I’ve exclaimed that the republic is toast. But I also know that installing a strongman is not what made this country great. Limited govt did.

I am fond of the line from A Man for All Seasons. “And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned ’round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? “

This comes to mind when I heard Trump say he was going to loosen the libel laws. The NYSlimes et alii can take care of themselves but what about you and me? And then there’s is that little development in Europe where people are prosecuted for slander for reading the Koran to the “wrong” audiences. Like Trump would make it possible for Obama’s words to come true: “The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam.”
