I guess now they are trying to stir up the anti-Patton vote.

LOL, good luck with that.

civilian casualties are communicated far more rapidly

That is going to be changing soon.

Trump wants to emulate MacArthur, a selfish, arrogant individual and Patton, who for all of his combat leadership skills, was a bombastic prima donna.

Kind of says it all.

The “point and click” war historians are upsetty pie. Fact is— regardless of the tech, war still involves gaining and holding ground and eliminating the enemy— something both Patton and Macarthur were rather GOOD at, using the tech of the day. Macarthur even more impressive in the vast area he had to succeed, far larger than little ole Europe (which is the size of the SE USA).

“But Trump’s pledge to imitate their styles sets modern-day military experts on edge”.

That’s because todays military leadership are mostly gutless, Politically Correct political ass kissers so they can get their first or next star.

If Trump has said Wesley Clark, the other pampered princes would have approved.
Advanced technology would have allowed Patton to dominate the battlefield now, even more than then.
Forget the slappings, Patton’s worst move was Task Force Baum.

Hey, our generals these days kiss Obama’s ass and worry if they have enough homos and transgenders “manning” their combat brigades.

How many historians have a won a war? And some generals are nothing more than political opportunists who have to be replaced when the real fighting starts. I don’t respect their opinion just because they are retired generals.

As far as WWII commanders go, I’d rather have Erich von Manstein running the country.

But military historians and retired generals say Trump has an inflated view of the two military men and especially their relevance to an era of modern warfare when armies rely more on technology and when battle successes and failures and civilian casualties are communicated far more rapidly than when MacArthur and Patton commanded troops 70 years ago.

Inflated view of Patton and MacArthur? Are they serious?

The second part, Trump never said or implied such a thing.

MacArthur may have been the most brilliant General in U.S. history. The fact that liberals hate him is good enough for me.

One thing I have noticed is most great leaders are also great speakers. MacArthur’s farewell address at West Point is one of the best speeches ever. Patton was also a fine speaker.

Pericles, the Great Athenian leader made what is considered by many to be the greatest speech ever. His funeral oration for Athenian dead.
