Is it legal to secretly spend money against a candidate? I thought all contributions were public, but maybe not.

Nothing about extortion requires secrecy. Definition of extortion

In particular:

It may be sufficient to threaten to accuse another person of a crime or to expose a secret that would result in public embarrassment or ridicule. The threat does not have to relate to an unlawful act.

Yes it’s a given that anyone who can afford to own the Chicago Cubs are very wealthy and politically connected. That said I live close to Wrigley Field. They employ thousands of people who seem quite happy to be employed. I see no signs they are employing cheap labor illegal. They’ve spent a ton of money improving Wrigley and the Cubs are in the running for a World Series. If they want to donate money to Rubio or whoever its a free country... I guess till Trump is elected
