Poll: Is It Time for a VAT in the U.S.?
wsj ^ | 2-12-2016

Posted on 02/12/2016 8:45:19 AM PST by Citizen Zed

Most other developed nations already have a VAT -- a system in which taxes are paid by each business in the different stages of production of a good or service, and, ultimately, directly or indirectly, by the consumer.

VAT is considered a consumption tax, since it taxes what people consume, rather than how much they earn or their profits from investment. That's also a reason why some consider it unfair for lower-income households. And critics say it could let government take a bigger slice of the overall economic pie, enabling higher spending.

Its supporters, meanwhile, say VAT is better for the economy than an income tax because it doesn't tax savings or investment. It's also a way to put a serious dent in the federal deficit. Republican supporters are willing to institute a VAT, but only if it replaces other taxes and doesn't increase the overall U.S. tax burden.

So, what's your view? Register your vote and leave us your comments. We may use them in print in a coming special report.

Yes, BUT Cruz doesn’t call it a VAT, so that is OK with his supporters. They don’t even care that they will need a passport to visit his birth place if he is elected! Another first! First US President born outside of the country!

Just want this country needs is another tax!
The politicians never remove old taxes so this would be a huge tax on everything we buy and it is guaranteed to go up and up.

RE:”What good is a poll behind a pay wall?”

We all have to pay the WSJ so we can stop this tax by freeping its poll.

It will save us $$$ in the long run.

A VAT only works if your government imposes a employment tax on your salary of 50-70% as they do in Europe; then you add a 17-21% VAT on top of the 50% tax, and the government get all but 25-30% of anything in the economy.

What they also do not realize is that the VAT tax is a communist/socialist way of taxation giving the federal government the right to tax every private financial activity, down to our selling a dozen eggs to our neighbors. I know that right now they are talking about it being on quote “large” ticket items, but once this unconstitutional tax is in place, there is nothing stopping it from becoming more of a behemoth than they current 100% constitutional 16th Amendment tax we now have.

The average, illiterate, economically ignorant American has no idea what a VAT is? They think it’s some kind of weird sandwich.

Ban the federal income tax, then we can talk about a replacement, like the FAIR Tax or a VAT.
