Indian Leopard Injures Six in Bangalore School [Article and Video]
The BBC ^ | February 8, 2016

A male leopard which entered a school in the Indian city of Bangalore injured six people trying to capture it.

A scientist and a forestry employee were among those mauled during the near 10-hour long effort to corner the dangerous animal on Sunday.

The leopard, which strolled into the Vibgyor International school, was eventually tranquillised and released.

A recent wildlife census estimated that India has a leopard population of between 12,000 and 14,000.

The eight-year-old male was spotted strolling inside the school premises in the Kundalahalli area.

Cheetahs are the largest cat that truly purrs.

I dont think any of them do. Cheetah’s maybe but only when they are communicating with their cubs. I saw somewhere that the only cats that actually purr are our domesticated cats.

The colors of the rainbow are Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet.

The way we remembered these as a kid was a made up word “Vibgyor” or reversed, Roy G. Biv”.

You bet big kitty. Don’t know why they were trying to capture it. Should end it’s life so it won’t come back. Skin would make a great coat.

The city of Bangalore could start a new tradition. The running of the Leopards. Way more fun than Bulls.

There have been over 13,000 deaths due to leopard attacks in India in the last 150 years or so.

That’s what you call a problem leopard. Catch and release is not the best option at this point. National Geographic just had an article about leopards. In India some of them live in parks right next to cities.

You don’t want leopards to be habituated to people like urban foxes and badgers. No way.

My pleasure!

But I still wonder about the name of the school...it’s not an Indian word, but an American construct regarding the visible spectrum of sunlight. (or perhaps it’s code for another use of the “rainbow”?)

we look at this as the normal behavior of a wild animal, while they think the animal has the soul of a deceased person inside it.

I'm skeptical that animal control laws in India are subject to religious beliefs - it's officially a secular country and I don't believe the holy cow thing applies to leopards as well. They probably decided to spare the leopard since they were able to tranquilize it and move it. Animal control here would probably do the same for a mountain lion - can't get mad at a wild predator for doing what wild predators do.

I just re-read the article and it says it took them 10 HOURS to capture the animal.

Don’t the police have guns?

How about an ocelot?

Honey West had a pet ocelot on the mid-’60s TV show.

You can find some interesting cat reading if you look up Colonel Jim Corbett.

He was kind of chief trouble shooter during the British Raj when it came to man eaters such as the Leopard of Rudraprayag which killed and ate 125 people.

Corbett was basically a quiet badass with nerves like steel wires.
