Touchdown! Yes, Astronauts in Space Can Watch the Super Bowl

While NASA astronauts Scott Kelly and Tim Kopra on the orbiting laboratory haven't announced their picks for the big game, they will be off duty and able to watch. (Kelly is a Houston Texans fan and watched football on Thanksgiving with former crewmember Kjell Lindgren.)

"Crew will be able to watch in real time; it will be sent up as usual for live events from Mission Control Houston," NASA spokesman Dan Huot told Space.com in an email. "It's a nominal off-duty Sunday for the entire crew, so no additional tasks for them aside from exercise."

After their day off, the crewmembers will return to their experiments on the space station. Kelly and cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko are within four weeks of the end of their yearlong mission, and the two are currently joined by Kopra, British astronaut Tim Peake, and cosmonauts Yuri Malenchenko and Sergey Volkov (who just completed a spacewalk Wednesday, Feb. 3).

Well, I hope they have a good person to sing the National Anthem, and not a caterwauler.

Isn’t there a long time delay to get to Mars? Will the American flag block the signal?

Lady Gaga. Kind of a whack job, but great pipes.

A simple feat.

You can reach the ISS using a 2 watt ham handie-talkie.

If you track the ISS with a high-gain dish you can use it as a reflector to communicate with other stations on the ground. It’s quite similar to radar.. you get the reflection back...

Line of sight is easy... even to places like the moon and mars.

I wonder if she will wear a nice gown, or one made of meat?

Sort of a sparkly red pant-Gown, but it looked good.

I could not seem to get audio on that clip.

Oh Well.

I’m betting she’ll play it straight. She knows her target market here. She is classically trained and doesn’t need a gimmick for this audience.

That would be nice!

I am Classically Trained also, and it would please me if that happened! :-)

“...Kelly and cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko are within four weeks of the end of their yearlong mission...”

They will fall 24 days short of a full year in orbit. If I was them, I’d find some way to delay return until a FULL year in orbit has been accomplished. Still, it will have been quite a ride.

Why would an intelligent person who is “working” in space want to watch something as mundane as football? I’d suspect there would be better forms of entertainment aplenty on a space mission.

Put me up there with Colonel Coleman. We'd find something to do, and make beautiful music together.
