Caucus Night Beer/Wine Thread

Posted on 02/01/2016 4:50:31 PM PST by markomalley

What are you drinking tonight for the caucuses?

As for me, I'm working on a Vienna Lager that I just tapped a couple of days ago. Lagered for 3 months.

Recipe:

Primary for a week in the 50s. Then into the keg and in the back of the fridge for 3 months. Turned out smooth.

How about you all? What are you imbibing to help pass the time this caucus evening?

I needed a shock to the system, so I’m drinking cherry brandy with a touch of rum. The touch of rum has had a ‘ghost’ chili (supposed to be the hottest variety) steeping in it for some weeks. Just about a quarter of a teaspoon of that rum provides a lot of heat.

Carolina Reaper Beer Experiment

I like my hot sauce on my chips, not on my beer, but, to each his own.

We have a microbrew on the coast called Rogue Ale. They have a jalapeno beer, but it doesn’t really have a lot of heat. It’s not a bad brew, though.

An IPA, India Pale Ale

I haven't got into home brewing yet, but hope to learn something here.

Oak Valley Merlot ($2.98) from Walmart. Can’t call it three buck Chuck as it’s actually less expensive by two cents. The Michelob Ultra is in the fridge when the Oak Valley fails me.
Didn’t feel like putting out for the more classy Yellow Tail or the J. Lohr out of Paso Robles (quite good for the price).

It’s the Iowa Caucuses for heaven’s sake not the big enchilada.

I’ll save the Chateau Montmorency ‘48 for the night that Hillary is indicted, handcuffed and led off to Guantanamo where she belongs. Everyone on FR will drink from that cup.

A growler:

You take it to your local craft brewery and they fill it up. You can then enjoy your local craft brew at home. For example, my local brewery, Jailbreak, will fill growlers for $12.

Sorry to admit this, but I actually like Bud Lime after working in the yard during the summer.

I don’t believe there’s any shame in admitting commercial “swill.” :-D None at all. Swill is better than nothing (depending on your perspective).

Or (depending on the swill). I'd have to be really, really, really thirsty before reaching for a Natty Bo (National Bohemian).

Well done on the heater! How big is that carboy? I’ve been using a Fast Ferment conical for wine and have been thinking about incorporating an aquarium under gravel heater. My neighbor with the tropical fish store has titanium submersible heaters that would be ideal for stabilizing the primary fermentation.

I understand. We’ve been poor, money-wise, so that was the affordable default. Things are better now, but we still tend to the easy buy, and we’re okay with is, lower carb/calorie and all. Good beer makes us fat, sooo...

It's a 6 gallon better bottle.

I've lusted after a Fast Ferment for a while. Does it work as well as claimed?

I’m having an all grain American brown ale kegged about 3 weeks ago. Darn tasty. A little drier than I normally make, but I think I prefer it.
