What is it about the Detroit Lions and generational players retiring in the middle of their prime?

It appears that Calvin Johnson could join Barry Sanders as Lions greats who walked away from football in their very early 30s, according to this report from ESPN's Adam Schefter. The report says that Johnson told his family and close friends that the 2015 season would be his final one in the NFL, reiterating the message to Lions head coach Jim Caldwell the day after the regular season was over.

The likes of Fox Sports, NBC Sports, CBS Sports and ESPN are all waving money at him to be their NFL analyst right now.

Keyshawn Johnson's contract was not renewed by ESPN, opening a spot for Megatron.

What he would like is a trade to a contender. The Lions won’t accommodate him so his only choice is to retire. All that health stuff is B.S..

Of course. And most probably are out by the time they’re 30. That’s essentially a 9 year career - 10 if they come out after their Junior season of College. The average life span of an NFL career is something like 5 years. The guys take a beating.

NFL players saw what happened to Junior Sway after he played football too long.

If it was 1995 or even 2005, then you’re right. But today? Fear of CTE.

That is a shame, he was never on a decent team! I think he was one of the best!

I imagine has saved his money. Good for him. More and more I think an NFL career of more than five years just isn’t worth it, and I suspect more and more players will reach that same conclusion.
