More than 1 million low-income residents in 21 states could soon lose their government food stamps if they fail to meet work requirements that began kicking in this month.
The rule change in the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program was triggered by the improving economy - specifically, falling unemployment. But it is raising concerns among the poor, social service providers and food pantry workers, who fear an influx of hungry people.
Recent experience in other states indicates that most of those affected will probably not meet the work requirements and will be cut off from food stamps. ...

My Sister-in-law works for a food bank organization and the number of people who do not work because they are “bipolar” is staggering! Whole families with adult “children” are on the take.
She has learned to spot them quick. She has also learned to spot people who really need the help, but is required to give out food and vouchers to everyone.
We used to have anti-trust laws to prevent corporations from becoming ‘too big to fail’ and stifling competition. A lot of jobs were lost through these mergers.
If we broke up some of the huge corporations, I believe it would increase the number of jobs available significantly and create new competition among corporations. And we have seen the benefits of increased competition before when monopolies were broken into smaller corporations.
I have a STEM background, I have seen many people laid off during mergers because the bigger corporations needed fewer IT staff. i.e. duplicate positions were eliminated. I’m not saying all mergers are bad, but big corporations should not be allowed to grow and crowd out competition.
Whether anti-trust laws are a good thing or not I will leave that for other people to decide. But if you want more jobs, then create new corporations and businesses and allow them to compete.

Minor children exempt - I missed that detail. In that case, if they are able to work, they should be required to work, school or comm program.
Is this a parody?
The rest of them are asked to please seek employment, do something to make themselves employable or help out in the community.
It seems rather reasonable.
I agree that it seems reasonable. Help out in the community, I couldn’t remember that terminology. Same as community service to me. I suppose that is associated with criminality.
This would be something that you could include on your job application and would give you a reference. This is a help to those who have never been in the work force or are trying to find something after a long time of being unemployed.
Thanks for thinking of me, time and several health issues make working impossible today. I was just diagnosed with an enlarged heart, that only functions at 67%, and HP that fluctuates with pain level. A Digestive disorder and something odd with the white/red blood cells in the bone marrow, they are still running test on that, ruled out Leukemia.
I remarried 4 years after I lost late husband. I turned 67 this last summer. Between our 2 SS checks and his Navy pension we get by.
You are correct about the mom and pop stores. My small town is not one of those which has many of them. To many fast food, nail salons owned by orientals, Fred’s, Dollar Gen. type business. Besides Kroger’s for groceries. Most people work in Memphis about 30 miles away. Or are 1-2 employee based owned businesses, usually all family.
I’ve seen some in niche stores in the mall, but I rarely go into Memphis to shop. Between the crime and rude cashier’s and help I stay away from them. They have noting for Seniors.
