How Amazon Prime Is Crushing the Competition

Here we are at the start of 2016, when Prime membership costs $99 a year, and a new report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) estimates that there are currently roughly 54 million Amazon Prime members in the U.S. Overall, 47% of the people who shop at Amazon are Prime members, the study says.

For Amazon, the astonishing growth of Prime is a tremendous win-win. Amazon benefits doubly with Prime because 1) it collects annual subscription fees from tens of millions of consumers; and 2) subscribers tend to spend a disproportionately high amount of money with Amazon compared to non-members.

A year ago, a CIRP report estimated that the average Prime member spent $1,500 annually at Amazon, versus $625 for nonmembers. That's a huge gap, giving credence to the theory that perhaps the biggest accomplishment of Prime is that once subscribers are hooked, they more or less stop shopping everywhere else.

Since you have to pay a hundred dollars a year, how could anyone not know they had Prime?

I’ve had prime for a long time and until about a month ago it’s been great. All of a sudden it’s taking four or five days to get things that are supposed to be here in 2. I haven’t been able to figure out why I’m paying $99 a year for something I’m not getting.

All them. Next watch for eBay to take a hit. Amazon now offers used items with warranty. I live in a rural area and use Amazon Prime heavily. Gives me a great supply of fire starting paper as a plus.

Or Cast Iron pots for all the kids at Christmas, as we did one year.

I've saved a ton of money over the past few years with Amazon Prime.

My wife loves to drink Sparkling Ice and there's never enough of the flavor she likes at the grocery stores. She now gets it delivered via a monthly subscription through Amazon and it's cheaper than in the stores.

Yep and you only need buy about 15 items a year to pay for it.

Even less if you actually use their prime video. Occasionally I find something there that is not available on NetFlix.

Weather-related shipping delays hit Amazon hard in December and January - that was true for non-Prime and Prime purchases. Often you can drop a note or call to their support and get a refund for what the shipping cost would have been when things are delayed.

Amazon just started the tribeca movie service. Really good movies - 4.99 a month.

Started last year and it more than paid for itself. Not a Bezos fan but AP works for us.

In fact between QVC and Amazon Prime we buy almost everything but food online, and we are very interested in Home Fresh (many PA suppliers) and Blue Apron.

Even when you know you're a member, Prime isn't all that it's cracked up to be.

A woman I know has her member niece order stuff for her in order to get the free premium shipping. Waited a tad bit too close to Christmas, and she didn't get the stuff until days after the holiday.

Frankly, no surprise thanks to the weather and cross-country origin of the package, not to mention the spike in overwhelming of the package delivery services with the demise of the brick-&-mortar supply model.

I get an Israeli Prilosec clone on Amazon prescription and save a lot over Wal-Mart’s Equate version, not to mention even more off the price of Prilosec itself.
