Thanks for summarizing the main reason I have only casually browsed FR the last several years. It has gotten so bad lately, I was finally inspired to post. Only to be met with the same vitriol.

If I'm unfamiliar with someone, I'll usually look at their posting history before I unload on them.

If the ideology consists of power by any means and taking things away from those who have the audacity to believe in autonomy (From a pure philosophical POV), self-reliance as well as thinking government is not a god and perpetual fiscal provider, then group think/collectivism is easier to circle the wagons with.

If compromised, big government, cronyistic candidates like Romney are elevated, then those who believe in autonomy/Biblical commands/ understand Locke/and yes, understand Hobbes will not rally behind those who abuse earthly power and the Social Contract.

Romney left a "huge paper trail". Quit appeasing big government as a political strategy Republicans (Anyone with a clue would realize that this has been a political strategy since Eisenhower) and maybe a solid consensus could be built.

It is like a Greatest Hits of Illogic, sometimes. We are told that:

1) Tariffs on Chinese goods will somehow punish China.
2) Going to war with Russia to defend Ukraine/Syrian rebels/Saudi oil interests is a matter of utmost national security importance.
3) Apple is a Communist company run by gays.
4) The War on Drugs is the only thing keeping every American school child from leaving home to follow Phish.
5) Americans who invest or work overseas should be stripped of their citizenship.

That conservatism is supposed to be about conserving the radical spirit of liberty propounded by the Founding Fathers never seems to enter into the discussion.
