Middle school student suspended for helping classmate during asthma attack

A student in Killeen, Texas, was suspended on Tuesday after he picked up a classmate who was having an asthma attack and carried her to the nurse's office against his teacher's instructions.

Anthony Ruelas, 15, a student at Gateway Middle School, an alternative school in the Killeen Independent School District (ISD), said his classmate was "wheezing and gagging for three minutes" when his teacher said everyone should stay calm and wait for an email reply from the nurse in response to the situation, Texas TV station KCEN reported.

Ruelas said he knew that his friend "needed help," which is why he decided to pick her up and carry her to the office.

The teacher's report on the incident read: “During 5th period another student complained that she couldn't breathe and was having an asthma attack. As I waited for a response from the nurse, the student fell out of her chair to the floor. Anthony proceeded to go over and pick her up, saying ‘f—k that, we ain’t got time to wait for no email from the nurse.’ He walks out of class and carries the other student to the nurse.”

I worked at a place where if you helped an employee in distress you could be fired.

In addition, they had fire extinguishers and we were all trained to use them. But, if we used them to put out a fire instead of running away we would be fired.

An employee felt faint and asked his buddies to take him home. They did. The buddies were too highly placed to fire, so they gathered all of us into the cafeteria and told us we would be fired if we did anything like this again. We were supposed to summon 911 for anything out of the ordinary.

Frankly, I’m tired of our overly safe politically correct world.

I sometimes think sending a child to public school is a form of child abuse. Not directed at you, but these kind of stories let you know common sense and real learning is not their agenda nowadays.

It’s all about authority and indoctrination.

If the country was functioning properly, the teacher would be in prison for reckless endangerment and the principal would be fired.

Young man was suspended for being a hero. He should get a medal not a reprimand.

It appears to be national news now. The school and the teacher might get raked over the coals now.

I once had a boss with a major drinking problem. He was sitting his car looking like he was ready to kill himself. We were told in no uncertain terms that we would be fired if we intervened. We watched till he came back in the office. I regret not helping him further. I’m still on linked in with him and I think he’s doing well

Funny thing, same company had a gas leak in the lab. As everyone evac’d, I ran out back, shut off the gas and fixed the gas leak. Thought I might get reprimanded but didn’t.

As one with bad lungs, I say hang that teacher to within an inch of its life's end, then cut it down and ask that IDIOT how it feels to be unable to breathe while conscious.

It's just like being the proverbial fish out of water--an absolute physical hell on earth!

Same sort of thing happened on a school bus. Two girls sitting next to each other when one had an asthma attack; the other girl gave her her own inhaler and saved her life. The girl was suspended for giving out drugs. The current school system is a total joke. Kids there are not educated but harassed at every opportunity with idiotic nonsensical rules. Common sense with these people is like a deodorant. Those that need it don’t use it.

Similar incident on a schoolbus in Maryland about a decade ago. A boy was having a severe asthma attack and about to turn blue. A girl on the bus used her emergency inhaler on him. The ER doctor said that she did exactly the right thing given the severity of the attack. She was suspended and labeled as having a drug problem as a result.

This kind of incident I would expect from a place like Maryland. But a small city in Texas? Not San Antonio, Austin, Houston, etc? I thought we had more common sense than that!

I homeschooled for 8 years, then broke down and let them go to high school.

My son ended up dropping out after his junior year and finishing up on his own at home.

In my daughter’s case, I think that it was a huge mistake to let her go to public school.
