CDC estimates the number of gastroschisis cases between 1995 to 2012 has increased, most prevalently among young, non-Hispanic black mothers, who saw a 263 percent increase in cases during that time period. While young maternal age has long been associated with the condition, researchers donât know the cause of the increase in cases among all the ages and ethnicities they reviewed.
"It concerns us that we don't know why more babies are being born with this serious birth defect," Coleen Boyle, Ph.D., director of CDCâs National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, said in a news release. "Public health research is urgently needed to figure out the cause and why certain women are at higher risk of having a baby born with gastroschisis."
The CDC report, which analyzed data from 14 states, compared the prevalence of babies born with gastroschisis among mothers of every age from 1995 to 2005, to those born between 2006 and 2012.

One word: Crack.
Oh, and no husbands.
I’m sure the abortionists will say it’s because the babies want their organs harvested or that it’s a sign.
Maybe its just consuming junk food, booze, drugs and with multiple sperm donors.
Bad nutrition. There are certain minerals and vitamins needed for the development of a baby that you can’t get in a Big Mac and a Coke.
Interesting. A friend of mine in Tulsa had a grandchild born with this condition, which is treated with surgery immediately upon delivery. The mother was quite young - 19, iirc - as was the father. The mother was white and the father Hispanic. We gave them some furniture when we moved.
I remember this happening to our teacher way back when I was in third grade - she was white, not too young or old. Her husband was a farmer.
I heard a doctor whose son has Downs Syndrome say that our genetic code is so complex that it’s a miracle anyone is born without defects.
My husband says something similar about how improbable it is that the Internet ever works.
I hope the researchers can isolate some contributing factors, thereby helping to reduce the incidence of this condition.
What if Hispanics are more prone to this type of disorder, and we see a spike in cases because they are producing a disproportionate percentage of the babies now?
In that case, the cause is demographic.
Technology and the medical sciences have improved drastically during this time, enabling more babies to survive, who otherwise would have perished.
Nope. First baby perfect 1980, son survived 1982. Only recently found strong link to a certain weed killer used on corn, ATRAZINE.
We run a farm market and my wife and I handled corn a lot
Yet his survival became my strength of faith. Anybody interested in story ask me at jrzullo@comcast. net
If not already a believer in the power of the risen Savior, you will be.
I often wonder about pesticides/herbicides and tiny babies forming in the womb. As in my previous post, the teacher whose son was born with his organs outside of his body was married to a farmer.
Praise the Lord for your son, if memory serves, our teacher’s baby didn’t survive.
