Hollywood loves a sequel, but on Thursday it was an unwelcome one when people of colour were shut out of all the Oscar acting races. Again.
All the 20 lead and supporting actor and actress nominees were white as for the second straight year, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences overlooked critically-acclaimed movies featuring black actors and directors.
Hip-hop hit movie "Straight Outta Compton" failed to get a place in the best picture category, and the Twitter hashtag #Oscarssowhite, which sprung up a year ago, was quickly revived.
Will Smith ("Concussion"), Idris Elba ("Beasts of No Nation"), and Michael B. Jordan ("Creed") were among those thought to be in the running for a nomination but left out.
"The snowstorms in 'The Revenant' are almost as blindingly white as the 2016 Oscars," read an ecard posted on Twitter by Someecards, referring to the movie that was filmed in freezing conditions and won a leading 12 nominations.
"Why did the Oscars announce all the white nominees first?" quipped British comedian Ricky Gervais on Twitter, four days after he hosted the Golden Globes ceremony in Beverly Hills.
Gil Robertson, president of the African American Film Critics Association, the largest such body in the world, said the omissions were disappointing.
"For Sylvester Stallone to be the only nominee for 'Creed' is totally a slap in the face to some of the other people involved in that project," Robertson told Reuters.
"Films are making the bulk of their money in foreign markets so it's going to be a business necessity for the industry to populate their films with the people of the world, who are not only black and brown but all other colours," he said.

Well, the minorities better up their game if they want to win awards, then. But no, they expect to coast and have praise lauded on them for minimal effort, because that is what affirmative action has conditioned them to expect.

The phrasing implies an active conspiracy. So there were groups of white people who all got together with the expressed purpose of preventing black people from receiving an award for talking in front of cameras

Hate to say it, but the criticisms of Creed being left out are valid.

I don’t give a rat’s hindquarters *who* wins Oscars this year,or any other year.Showbiz plays such an unimportant role in my life that if Hollywood were to explode tomorrow I wouldn’t shed a *single* tear.

The academy is simply telling the black film community to up their game, that’s all. Maybe they’re just a teensy bit tired of the ever popular ‘whites are devils’ motif.

I agree I watch very little of what comes out of Hollywood but I do like Matt Damon and The Martian is probably the only movie I will eventually watch.
There’s bias at work but it’s not racism.
Elba is great in Beasts of No Nation but his character is evil in a disturbing way. Also it’s a Netflix production and Hollywood sees internet streaming as a threat to their business model.
I haven’t seen Creed but the academy has always been biased against sequels, especially ones that are part of a long series mostly designed to cash in. Godfather II and Return of the King are rare exceptions.
How many whites win any black-specific entertainment awards each year?

So sick of color and quotas. Colorblind society is not our current hyper-color obssessed society.
Only Blacks should get oscars. See how many watch once that rule is put into effect.
Wonder if Reuters has shed any tears over the lack of proportional representation for whites in the NBA? If not, I’m not interested in their handwringing over the Oscars.
